Size (plate mark): 37.9 x 46.3 cm.
The Russian Tsar Peter the Great (1672-1725) undertook a journey through Western Europe to strengthen diplomatic relations. On Sunday, August 25, 1697, the tsar and his entourage arrived in Amsterdam.
In Amsterdam, the Russians were hosted by merchants engaged in trade with Russia. These traders spared no expense to please the envoys, hoping to improve trade conditions in the Russian port city of Arkhangelsk. Additionally, they sought to gain the privilege of trading with Persia and China through Russia.
On August 29, 1697, the Amsterdam city government treated the Russian embassy to a banquet at the Kloveniersdoelen. Following this, a grand fireworks display was launched from a thirteen-meter-high triumphal arch floating on two rafts in the water of the Amstel river.
The view shows the Kloveniersdoelen on the left, with the Swych Utrecht tower to its right. In the center, the Kloveniersburgwal is visible, with the Waag on the Nieuwmarkt seen in the distance beyond the drawbridge to the right. On the far right, trees and houses line the Kloveniersburgwal, with a portion of the Halvemaansbrug also visible.
