JANVIER. DIVERTISSEMENTS SUR LA GLACE“ [January. Entertainment on the ice.] Copper engraving made at the end of the 17th / beginning of the 18th century by Jean Mariette. Coloured by a later hand. Size (image): 19 x 26.2 cm.

This French print of an ice skating scene, demonstrates that also foreigners also enjoyed such scenes, incorporating elements similar to those found in Dutch examples: skaters, sleds, children with a stick to play a kind of golf on mirroring frozen water. People are having fun and laughing at a maid who has dropped her milk jug.

Jean Mariette (1660-1742) came from a well-known Parisian family of engravers, booksellers, prints and drawings dealers. When it was decided to sell the collection a year after the death of his son in 1775, There were no less than 20,000 drawings.
