Comitatus Zelandiae Tabula“,

copper engraving published by Frederick de Wit between 1670-1689 as part of his “Nieuw Kartboeck vanande XVII Nederlandtsche Provincien” [new atlas of the seventeen Dutch provinces]. With original hand colouring. Size: 46 x 54,5 cm.

For this map of Zeeland, Frederick de Wit copied a map previously published by Nicolaes Visscher. The geographical image is exactly the same, the ships and the richly decorated cartouche have been copied, but the composition has changed. The scale bars have been moved to the top left, where Visscher has the title, and De Wit has placed the title where Visscher has the dedication. The shield on the right in the cartouche now bears the monogram of Frederick de Wit. Nothing has been added to the map; the Nieuwekerke polder near Arnemuiden, which was created in 1651, is not there yet.
