The ornate title cartouche includes the Spanish royal coat of arms (used between 1556-1700), a sea monster, and other elaborate illustrations.

At the end of the 17th century, the Iberian Peninsula was going through a period of significant political and economic change.

Politically, Portugal had just regained its independence from Spanish rule after 60 years of Union. The two countries had been united under the same monarchy since 1580, but Portugal’s successful revolt in 1640 marked the end of this arrangement. The new Portuguese monarchy was facing the challenge of establishing its authority and restoring the country’s economy.

In Spain, the monarchy was facing political and economic instability, with a long-standing war with France, declining power and influence, and a rapidly increasing national debt. The reign of Charles II, who was childless and had a poor health, added to the instability, as he was unable to produce an heir to succeed him, leading to a succession crisis.

Economically, the Iberian Peninsula was facing many challenges, including the decline of the once-flourishing spice trade, which had been a major source of wealth for Portugal. Portugal was also facing competition from the Dutch and English in their colonies in Asia and the Americas. In addition, the widespread exploitation of the native populations in their colonies was leading to growing unrest and resentment, which would eventually lead to calls for independence.

Despite these challenges, the Iberian Peninsula remained a significant player in the global economy, with significant holdings in the Americas, Africa, and Asia. Its ports were major centers of trade, and its shipbuilding and seafaring industries were among the best in the world.
