Heliogravure uit 1901 uitgegeven door Arthur Tooth & Sons. naar het gelijknamige schilderij (Opus CCCLXIII) van Sir Lawrence (Lourens) Alma-Tadema. In de tijd met de hand gekleurd. Afm.: 35 x 82,5 cm.
Aristocratische meisjes en hun mannelijke begeleider luisteren naar een fluitist. Inspiratie voor de titel van het werk vond Alma-Tadema in een brief van de beroemde Engelse dichter Percy Bysshe Shelley: “We watched the ocean and sky together, under the roof of blue Italian weather“. Shelley (1792 – 1822) gold als idool voor de groep Victoriaanse en Pre-Raphaëlitische kunstenaars.
Een kunstrecensent zei na het gereedkomen van het schilderij: “Its colour is so equisite and dainty; its composition and arrangement so consummately learned, whether as to perspective, linear and aerial, tone and atmosphere, and reflected lights; and the drawings of the figures and the painting of the flesh so admirable that this picture may be pronounced in some qualities superior to, or more attractive than anything the master has produced before.”
