Afm. 16,1 x 19,9 cm.<\/p>\n<p>Schilder en etser Kobell was geboren te Rotterdam. Hoewel oorspronkelijk voor de handel opgeleid, is hij \u201c<em>met het teekenen en schilderen van zee- en riviergezigten een der bekwaamste meesters van zijnen tijd in dat kunstvak geworden<\/em>\u201d. Zijn kunstenaarsopleiding kreeg hij tijdens een zakenverblijf in Engeland, 1770-1771 en aan de Amsterdamse Tekenakademie. Hij reisde door Franrijk, keerde in 1773 terug in Rotterdam en woonde tussen 1773 en 1778 in Delfshaven. In Rotterdam was Kobell een van de oprichters van het genootschap \u201cHierdoor tot Hooger\u201d, de voorloper van de Academie voor Beeldende Kunsten en Wetenschappen , waar gedurende twee avonden per week in een kamer boven een stal van een rijtuigverhuurder naar een model (gekleed, uiteraard) kon worden getekend.<\/p>\n<p>Zijn werk onderscheidt zich \u201c<em>door nauwkeuigheid van omtrek, stoutheid en vuur van ordonnantie, kracht en fikschheid van uitvoering<\/em>\u201d. Zijn tekeningen en etsen waren zeer gewild en dienden als voorbeeld voor prenten van onder anderen Matthias de Sallieth en Simon Fokke.
