Afm.: 50 x 39,5 cm.<\/p>\n<p>Romeinse kunstliefhebbers aanschouwen een marmeren beeld dat wordt rond gedraaid door een slaaf. De voorstelling is de pendant van &#8220;<em>A Picture Gallery<\/em>&#8220;.<\/p>\n<p>De afgebeelde personen zijn Alma-Tadema zelf, zittend op de bank en staand daarnaast zijn vrouw <a href=\"https:\/\/nl.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Laura_Theresa_Alma-Tadema\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Laura<\/a> en hun kinderen <a href=\"https:\/\/nl.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Anna_Alma-Tadema\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Anna<\/a> en <a href=\"https:\/\/nl.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Laurence_Alma-Tadema\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Laurense<\/a>, die hij gebaart niet te dicht bij het getoonde beeld te komen. Op de bank zitten ook Ellen Gosse en haar echtgenoot Edmund (Alma-Tadema&#8217;s zwager, <a href=\"https:\/\/nl.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Edmund_Gosse\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Sir Edmund William Gosse<\/a>, een befaamd kunstcriticus op het gebied van beeldhouwwerken).<\/p>\n<p>Verschillende beroemde beelden uit de oudheid omgeven de groep. Zo ziet men links een beeld van de jonge Hercules in gevecht met een <a href=\"https:\/\/nl.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hydra_van_Lerna\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">slang<\/a> uit het Museo Nazionale in Napels. (Hercules was de buitenechtelijke zoon van Zeus. Zijn vrouw Hera was jaloers op het overspel en zond een slang naar de wieg, die door het wonderkind Hercules tijdens het spelen gewurgd werd). De marmeren tafel rechts komt uit de <a href=\"https:\/\/upload.wikimedia.org\/wikipedia\/commons\/0\/0a\/Sommer%2C_Giorgio_%281834-1914%29_-_n._1237_-_Pompei_-_Casa_di_Cornelio_Ruffo.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Casa Rufi<\/a> in Pompeii, daarop een <a href=\"https:\/\/commons.wikimedia.org\/wiki\/Category:Hildesheim_Treasure#\/media\/File:Athena-Schale_Hildesheimer_Silberfund.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">zilveren schaal<\/a> die in 1868 was opgegraven bij <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hildesheim_Treasure\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Hildesheim<\/a> (D) (en die terugkomt in nog 15 andere van Alma-Tadema&#8217;s schilderijen). De buste linksachter van Pericles komt uit het Vaticaan. Het beeld van de zittende vrouw rechts stelt <a href=\"https:\/\/nl.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Iulia_Agrippina_minor\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Agrippina<\/a> voor (echtgenote van Claudius en moeder van Nero) en staat in de Capitolijnse Musea. De grote bronzen schaal in het midden is een door Alma-Tadema gecomponeerde <em>tazza<\/em> (oorspronkelijk een drinkschaal) met het zeemonster <a href=\"https:\/\/nl.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Scylla_(nimf)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Scylla<\/a>, de gewezen nimf met de romp en het hoofd van een vrouw met hondenkoppen uit haar zij. In de achterste kamer bevindt zich een verzameling bronzen beeldjes, grote kandelaren en hanglampen; luxe-voorwerpen, vergelijkbaar met de objecten die werden gevonden in vele pompejaanse huizen en die hier in dit kunstwarenhuis worden aangeboden.<\/p>\n<p><em>A Sculpture Gallery <\/em>was de laatste uit een serie werken met daarop galerie\u00ebn. Na Alma-Tadema&#8217;s reis naar Rome (1875\/6) raakt hij minder ge\u00efnteresseerd in het afbeelden van bestaande kunstvoorwerpen. Door zijn groeiende kennis is hij in staat steeds meer objecten zelf te verzinnen.
