Oost-Indi\u00eb vaarder<\/b> uit Johannes Van Keulen I<\/a><\/b>‘s De Volmaakte Bootsman<\/i>, uitgegeven te Amsterdam in 1680<\/b>. Kopergravure vervaardigd door Anthonie de Winter <\/b>(1652 – 1707). Afm.: 41,5 x 51 cm.<\/p>\n

Grote en fraai gegraveerde scheepsprent uit een uiterst zeldzaam boek van een onbekende auteur. “Zeer dienstig voor alle zeevarende lieden.<\/em>” “De Volmaakte Bootsman: vervattende hoe men uit eene gegeven scheepslengte de voornaamste scheepsdeelen zal vinden, de bemasting, het kerven van het staande en loopende touwwerk en verder hetgeen in het toetakelen der schepen van nooden is : mitsgaders de takelagie voor verscheiden charters van schepen, welke bij de ‘s lands oorlogschepen in gebruik zijn, en verder al hetgeene, dat een kloek bootsman noodig is.<\/em>”<\/p>\n

Voorafgaand aan de inleiding wordt de lezer toegesproken:<\/p>\n

“Kloeke mannen, die de baar[d]en,
\nVan Neptunus zult bevaren,
\nWilt gij weten net en wis,
\n‘t Geen een Zeeman nodig is.
\nHoe men moet de Scheepen bouwen,
\nNette maat in alles houwen,
\nVan de deelen groot en klein,
\nDie tot dit werk nodig zijn,
\nMasten, Stengen, Raas en Zeilen,
\nOm in ‘t taak’len niet te feilen.
\nHoe men ‘t staand en lopen goed,
\nOp haar Passe kerve moet,
\nHier na ‘t Bolwerk evenaren,
\nEn waar alle touwtjes varen.
\nZiet deez’ dingen alle gaar
\nHier in order bij malkaar.
\nWat een Bootsman dient te weten,
\nDaar van is hier niets vergeten.
\nDaarom, Helden van Beleid,
\nPoog je d’een of d’andre tijd,
\nAls Captein te commandeeren,
\nGaat deez’ bladen eerst doorleren.
\nWend u dan tot hoger stof,
\nZult bereiken eer en lof.”<\/em><\/p>\n

Het boek werd (gewijzigd?) heruitgegeven in 1818 door de weduwe Hulst van Keulen. Daarin is ook de gravure van scheepsvoorstelling opgenomen. De koperen plaat is dan echter al sterk afgesleten en de afdruk zeer zwak.<\/p>\n
