Henr. Hondio<\/em><\/strong>&#8220;. Copper engraving made in 1630, here in its second state (of four) published by <strong>Johannes Janssonius<\/strong> in <strong>1641<\/strong>. Coloured by a later hand. Size: 54,5 x 38 cm.<\/p>\n<p>This is one of the most famous and most beautiful world maps from the first half of the 17th century. It was Hondius-Janssonius&#8217; answer to competitor Blaeu&#8217;s world map. In 1630 <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Henricus_Hondius_II\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Henricus Hondius<\/a> and his son-in-law <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Jan_Janssonius\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Johannes Janssonius<\/a> published a reissue of the atlas compiled by (father) <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Jodocus_Hondius\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jodocus Hondius<\/a> with maps by <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Gerardus_Mercator\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Gerard Mercator<\/a>. After the death of Henricus Hondius, Janssonius continues with the publishing house and puts his name on the copper plate of the world map.<\/p>\n<p>The portraits in the corners of the engraving are (from top left, clockwise) <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Julius_Caesar\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Julius Caesar<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ptolemy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Claudius Ptolemy<\/a> (Greek geographer and astrologer, renowned for his maps copied in the 15th century), Jodocus Hondius (cartographer and founder of the publisher) and Gerardus Mercator (&#8216;the father of modern geography&#8217; and teacher of Jodocus Hondius).<\/p>\n<p>Around the eastern and western hemispheres we see the elements: the god <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Apollo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Apollo<\/a> in his chariot with <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Phoenix_(mythology)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Phoenix<\/a> and fire-breathing dragons depicting Fire (Ignis), the goddess <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Diana_(mythology)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Diana<\/a> with birds and the wind as a depiction of Air (Aer), the goddess Abundantia with animals and the cornucopia represent the Earth (Terra), and Aquarius with water jug, shells and fish represent Water (Aqua).
