(voorstelling): 29,4 x 29,9 cm (incl. tekst 41 x 30,5 cm.)<\/p>\n<p>De Nederlandse leeuw is een begrip. Het dier staat symbool voor de kracht en moed van het land. De leeuw speelt een belangrijke rol bij voetbal in onze tegenwoordige tijd, maar de verbeelding van Nederland als leeuw werd ge\u00efntroduceerd in moeilijke tijden, aan het eind van de 16de eeuw. Vanaf het midden van de Opstand tegen de Spanjaarden, stonden de Nederlanden model voor een reeks leeuwekaarten die op de markt kwamen.<\/p>\n<p>De leeuwekaart fungeerde niet alleen als nuttige landkaart, maar werd als statement vaak aan de wand gehangen. Een uiting van actief beleefd burgerschap, van trots, van zelfbewustzijn en diende in een handelskantoor of overheidsgebouw vaak als spectaculair visitekaartje.<\/p>\n<p>Deze zeldzame Duitstalige uitgave van deze leeuwekaart werd uitgegeven als los blad in de <em>Holl\u00e4ndischer Merkurius<\/em>, een &#8216;almanak&#8217;, een soort voorloper van onze huidige nieuwsbladen en kranten. Uitgever Serlin liet voor zijn kaart de leeuwekaart die hij had gezien in de Franstalige <em>Le Mercure Holandois<\/em> nagraveren.
