In 1655 werd het stadhuis op de Dam in gebruik genomen. Hoewel het toen nog niet klaar was, noemden Amsterdammers het gebouw trots hun wereldwonder. Bouwmeester Jacob van Campen had voor Hollandse begrippen een buitengewoon monumentaal classicistisch gebouw ontworpen, dat herinnerde aan de architectuur van de Grieken en Romeinen. Een gebouw als afspiegeling van Gods schepping. Een universum in het klein, symmetrisch en volmaakt.<\/p>\n

Het stadhuis was het bestuurlijk centrum. Daar beslisten de burgemeesters over de politiek van de stad en zelfs van de Republiek. In het stadhuis zetelden ook schout en schepenen, kwam de vroedschap bijeen en ook de Wisselbank was er gevestigd, \u00e9\u00e9n van de belangrijkste financi\u00eble instellingen ter wereld.<\/p>\n

In 1808 krijgt het stadhuis een andere bestemming en wordt het koninklijk paleis.<\/p>\n

Op de Dam zien we naast kruiers en eenvoudige kooplui, gegoede burgers en hun bedienden. In het Damrak liggen de lichte schepen, die goederen vanaf het IJ de stad hebben ingevoerd. De goederen worden gewogen en belast in het gebouw in het midden: de Waag. Vandaar worden ze per kruiwagen of met door paarden getrokken sledes naar de pakhuizen en winkels gebracht. We zien links ook een sleepkoets (voor personenvervoer), deze 17de-eeuwse uitvinding had geen wielen, maar werd dus over de straatstenen gesleept. Links op de hoek van de Kalverstraat de kaartenwinkel van Fredrick de Wit.<\/p>\n

Dit blad komt uit een serie van 25, grote, zeldzame, stadsgezichten en geeft een kleurrijk beeld van het leven en bedrijf van Amsterdam in het begin van de 18de eeuw.<\/p>\n

Niet alleen zijn deze prenten voor de registratie van de architectuur en het stadsbeeld van belang, maar door de aankleding leren zij ons over de zeden en gewoonten uit die tijd.\u00a0(Zie bijvoorbeeld: het IJ<\/a>, Muntplein<\/a>, Schreierstoren<\/a>\u00a0en Korenbeurs<\/a>).<\/p>\n
