Signed in pencil by both Alma-Tadema and Rajon. Coloured by a later hand. Size: 11 \u00d7 22 cm.<\/p>\n<p>With this flower seller, Alma-Tadema presents a scene from everyday life in ancient Rome. Rather than depicting an important historical event, he created an archaeologically reconstructed genre scene populated by anonymous figures. The people in many of Alma-Tadema\u2019s works often appear distinctly English in type, with fair complexions and reddish hair, frequently combined with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whizzpast.com\/victorian-hairstyles-a-short-history-in-photos\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Victorian hairstyles<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In this composition, the architecture has been stripped of most decorative detail.
