“PETIT VILLAGE PRES D’AMSTERDAM<\/strong><\/em>” [Ouderkerk?]\u009d<\/p>\n

Ets vervaardigd ca. 1775<\/strong> te Parijs door Fran\u00e7ois Basan<\/strong> naar een voorbeeld van Aert van der Neer<\/strong><\/a>. Later met de hand gekleurd. Afm. (afb.) 20 x 29,7 cm.<\/p>\n

Amsterdammers schaatsten graag buiten, weg uit de drukte en de stank van hun stad. Zolang Amstel en IJ niet dicht lagen, waren ze aangewezen op de weteringen. De Boerenwetering<\/a>, die vanaf de Heiligewegspoort<\/a> richting de Kalfjeslaan<\/a> en Amstelveen<\/a> liep, was de bekendste. Daarover kluchten schrijver Bernardus Mourik<\/a> in 1752:<\/p>\n

” Ik kwam aan de Wetring myn Schaatsen aan te binden,<\/em>
\nen keek voor eerst of ik de Kalvieslaan kon vinden.<\/em>
\nVan daar zo reed ik na het Dorp van Amstelveen,<\/em>
\nEn doe zetten ik de Koers op Oudekerk heen.<\/em>“\u009d<\/p>\n

Schaatsenrijden was nooit zonder gevaar, maar meestal waren er behulpzame omstanders die voorzichtig naar een drenkeling toe kropen en een lijn toewierpen. Vanaf de 17e-eeuw gebruikte men ook al ladders om een luid roepende ongelukkige op het droge te helpen. Maar toch: “er is geen ijs, of ‘t kost menschevleys<\/em>“\u009d.<\/p>\n
