Et Praefecturam Bahusiae.<\/em><\/strong>&#8221; Engraved double-page map in beautiful original colour, published in Amsterdam <strong>approx. 1696<\/strong> by <strong>Cornelis Danckerts<\/strong>. Size: 58 x 50 cm.<\/p>\n<p>The maps shows us the southern part of the Kingdom of Norway divided into the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Diocese_of_Nidaros\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Diocese of Nidaros<\/a> (today&#8217;s Trontheim), <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Diocese_of_Bj%C3%B8rgvin#History\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Bergen<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Diocese_of_Oslo#History\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Oslo<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Diocese_of_Stavanger#History\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Stavanger<\/a> and the prefecture of <span class=\"mw-page-title-main\">Bohusl\u00e4n (<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bohusl%C3%A4n#History\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">B\u00e5huslen<\/a>). There is an inset <\/span>map of northern Norway in the upper left corner showing the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Finnmark#Norwegian\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Finnmark<\/a> region\u009d.<\/p>\n<p>The 17th century saw a series of wars between Denmark\u2013Norway and Sweden. The <a title=\"Kalmar War\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Kalmar_War\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Kalmar War<\/a> between 1611 and 1613 saw 8.000 Norwegian peasants conscripted. Despite lack of training, Denmark\u2013Norway won and Sweden abandoned its claims to the land between <a title=\"Tysfjord\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tysfjord\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Tysfjord<\/a> and <a title=\"Varangerfjord\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Varangerfjord\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Varangerfjord<\/a>. With the Danish participation in the <a title=\"Thirty Years' War\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Thirty_Years%27_War\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Thirty Years&#8217; War<\/a> in 1618\u201348, a new conscription system was created in which the country was subdivided into 6.000 <i>legd<\/i>, each required to support one soldier. <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Denmark%E2%80%93Norway\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Denmark\u2013Norway<\/a> lost the war and was forced to cede <a title=\"J\u00e4mtland\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/J%C3%A4mtland\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">J\u00e4mtland<\/a> and <a title=\"H\u00e4rjedalen\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/H%C3%A4rjedalen\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">H\u00e4rjedalen<\/a> to Sweden. The <a title=\"Second Northern War\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Second_Northern_War\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Second Northern War<\/a> in 1657 to 1660 resulted in Bohusl\u00e4n being ceded to Sweden. The Danish monarch elevated himself to absolute and hereditary king of Denmark (including Norway) in 1661, eliminating the power of the nobles. A new administrative system was introduced. Departments organized by portfolio were established in Copenhagen, while Norway was divided into <a title=\"Counties of Norway\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Counties_of_Norway\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">counties<\/a>, each led by a district governor, and further subdivided into bailiwicks. About 1,600 government officials were appointed throughout the country.<\/p>\n<p>This map was made when <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Ulrik Fredrik Gyldenl\u00f8ve\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ulrik_Fredrik_Gyldenl%C3%B8ve\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ulrik Fredrik Gyldenl\u00f8ve<\/a> was viceroy of Norway. It is embellished by a depiction of Neptune and a mermaid below the title cartouche and crowned with the Norwegian coat of arms.<\/p>\n<p>The Danckerts family were notable print and map sellers, and engravers in Amsterdam for nearly a hundred years, between 1630 and 1727.<\/p>\n<p>Between 1680 and 1700, Justus an his three sons Cornelis, Theodorus, Justus II published several editions of their Danckerts Atlas.
