DUTCH SHIPS ON A BECALMED RIVER, AFTER JAN VAN DE CAPPELLE, C. 1880

Calm river estuary with Dutch ships, watercolour and gouache made c. 1880 by Louis Haghe after Jan van de Cappelle’s “A River Scene with Dutch Vessels Becalmed.” Signed lower right “L. Haghe”. Size: 45 × 60 cm. In its original 19th-century frame.

As in the work of Jan van de Cappelle, the emphasis is less on maritime activity than on light, atmosphere and stillness. The low horizon leaves most of the sheet to an immense, cloud-filled sky. The almost motionless vessels and their soft reflections reinforce the impression of calm and spaciousness.

In the right foreground lies a small flat-bottomed vessel loaded with peat. Beneath the flag is an unusual, possibly makeshift rudder, while laundry has been hung out to dry from a boom above the water. Further away, ships, masts and sails gradually dissolve into the pale haze above the water.

Haghe has convincingly translated Van de Cappelle’s seventeenth-century oil painting into the transparent, luminous medium of watercolour, supplemented with passages of opaque gouache.

Louis Haghe (1806–1885) was born in Tournai and settled in England as a young man. He initially made his name as a lithographer and worked for many years with William Day in the firm of Day & Haghe, which was appointed Lithographers to the Queen in 1838. Among his best-known achievements are some 250 lithographs after drawings by David Roberts for the latter’s monumental publications on the Holy Land, Egypt and Nubia. From the early 1850s onwards, Haghe devoted himself almost entirely to watercolour painting. From 1873 to 1884 he served as president of the Institute of Painters in Water Colours, later the Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours.

The model for this watercolour, Jan van de Cappelle’s A River Scene with Dutch Vessels Becalmed, was painted around 1650 and is now in the National Gallery in London. The painting entered the museum’s collection in 1929 as a bequest from Lord Revelstoke.
