GERMANY AND THE HOLY ROMAN EMPIRE \u2013 MAGNIFICENT MAP WITH DECORATIVE FIGURE BORDERS, 1626<\/strong><\/p>\n

This exceptionally decorative and detailed map depicts the German lands and large parts of Central Europe in the early seventeenth century. It extends from the North Sea and the Low Countries in the west to Poland and Prussia in the east, and from the North Sea and Baltic coasts in the north to the Alps and northern Italy in the south.<\/p>\n

Much of the territory belonged to the Holy Roman Empire<\/a>, a vast but politically fragmented collection of principalities, duchies, counties, bishoprics and free imperial cities<\/a>. The map illustrates this complex political and geographical landscape with a remarkable wealth of place names, rivers, mountain ranges and regional designations. It was published during the early years of the Thirty Years’ War (1618\u20131648)<\/a>, which would devastate large parts of Central Europe.<\/p>\n

What makes this map particularly appealing is its elaborate decorative border on all four sides, characteristic of the so-called cartes \u00e0 figures<\/em> produced during the golden age of Amsterdam cartography.<\/p>\n

Along the upper border are eight equestrian portraits, with Emperor Matthias<\/a> (1557\u20131619) in the centre, accompanied by the seven Prince-Electors of the Holy Roman Empire. Matthias appears twice: as Holy Roman Emperor and as King of Bohemia and Hungary. The other portraits depict the three ecclesiastical electors\u2014the Archbishops of Mainz, Trier and Cologne\u2014and the secular electors of the Palatinate, Saxony and Brandenburg. These portraits recall the original edition of 1615, when Matthias was still on the imperial throne.<\/p>\n

The side borders contain eight figures in characteristic contemporary dress, representing different social classes and regional populations. Among them are German noblemen, citizens of Nuremberg, Swiss men and women, and peasants in their everyday clothing. Between these figures and the map itself are narrow vertical bands displaying numerous coats of arms of principalities and other territories.<\/p>\n

The lower border is decorated with ten panoramic city views. From left to right, these depict Cologne, Frankfurt am Main, Strasbourg, Nuremberg, Prague, Augsburg, Heidelberg, L\u00fcbeck, Leipzig and Hamburg. These miniature panoramas show the principal buildings, church towers and city walls. They are based on views previously used for a map of Germany published by Willem Jansz. Blaeu<\/a> in 1609. An extensive series of coats of arms also runs along the lower edge of the map.<\/p>\n

In the lower left corner is the richly ornamented title cartouche, surmounted by a crowned eagle, with a scale of distances beneath it. Three Dutch sailing ships are depicted in the North Sea, together with a large compass rose.<\/p>\n

The map was originally engraved and published in 1615 by Pieter van den Keere<\/a>, also known by his Latinised name Petrus Kaerius. When he was obliged to sell part of his publishing stock and copperplates in 1623, the plate for this map passed into the possession of Johannes Janssonius, to whom he was related by marriage. Janssonius altered the publisher’s imprint in the title cartouche and reissued the map in 1626.<\/p>\n

The map was initially sold as a separately published sheet. It was subsequently included as a general map of Germany in early editions of Janssonius’ Atlantis Maioris Appendix<\/em> (1630) and Theatrum Imperii Germanici<\/em> (1632).<\/p>\n

Combining exceptional geographical detail, numerous heraldic devices, figures in period costume, equestrian portraits and panoramic city views, this map ranks among the most attractive examples of richly decorated Dutch cartography from the early seventeenth century.<\/p>\n
