Afm. 20 x 30 cm.<\/p>\n<p>Van de jaren 1630 tot het midden van de negentiende eeuw was Japan voor buitenlanders vrijwel afgesloten. De Nederlanders waren vanaf 1641 de enige Westerlingen die er mochten verblijven en handel drijven. Ze moesten zich wel aan strenge voorschriften houden, en mochten alleen op <a href=\"https:\/\/inter-antiquariaat.nl\/antiek\/verkocht\/dejima-isaac-tirion-ca-1740\/\">Deshima<\/a> wonen, een kunstmatig eiland in de haven van <a href=\"https:\/\/inter-antiquariaat.nl\/antiek\/verkocht\/dejima\/\">Nagasaki<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Om hun bijzondere relatie met de Japanse autoriteiten te onderhouden, moesten de Nederlanders eer bewijzen aan het hof van de <a href=\"https:\/\/nl.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Shogun_(titel)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">sh\u00f4gun<\/a> in Edo (het tegenwoordige Tokyo). Om de vier jaar ondernamen ze een reis van een maand om hun loyaliteit te verklaren en geschenken te brengen.<\/p>\n<p>De sh\u00f4gun hield veel van paarden en exotische dieren als olifanten. In 1821 importeerden de Hollanders vanuit Mekka een kameel en een dromedaris, de eerste die ooit in Japan kwamen.<\/p>\n<p>Dit is een zgn. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aisf.or.jp\/~jaanus\/deta\/n\/nagasakihanga.htm\">Nagasaki-prent<\/a>, een houtsnede betrekking hebbend op Nagasaki, die populair waren in de <a href=\"https:\/\/nl.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Edoperiode\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Edoperiode<\/a> (1603-1868). Ze tonen vaak buitenlanders of hun vreemde voorwerpen, zoals schepen. De prenten voorzagen in een behoefte,\u00a0 Japanners waren nieuwsgierig naar de buitenlanders in hun land en werden vaak gekocht als souvenirs door Japanse reizigers tijdens hun verblijf in Nagasaki.
