Champenois in Paris as a special supplement for <em>L\u2019Estampe Moderne<\/em>, issued <strong>August 1897<\/strong>. Signed in the stone lower left. Size: 38 x 21,7 cm.<\/p>\n<p>Mucha was probably the single most famous and influential artist of the whole <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Art_Nouveau\">Art Nouveau<\/a> movement in Europe. This lithograph he made for <em>L\u2019Estampe Moderne<\/em>, is an outstanding example of the finest period of his decorative style. With its combination of an exotic richness, an overt and luxuriant sensuality, and the marvellous flowing sinuous patterns of line and colour it created a whole new era of taste.<\/p>\n<p>In 1862 <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Gustave_Flaubert\">Gutave Flaubert<\/a> wrote his romantic novel \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Salammb%C3%B4#\/media\/File:FlaubertSalammbo.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>Salammb\u00f4<\/em><\/a>\u201d, about the fictional daughter of Hamilcar Barca, the barbaric ruler of Carthage as a subject, in which she was searching for a magic veil (\u201c<em>le Za\u00efmph<\/em>\u201d seen here trailing from her shoulder) that was stolen from the city shortly after the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/First_Punic_War\">First Punic War<\/a>. Salammb\u00f4 falls in love with the barbarian M\u00e2tho, the man who stole the veil. When M\u00e2tho is caught and tortured to death, she choses to die rather than marry the man she was meant for. The Za\u00efmph has brought death upon those who touched it.<\/p>\n<p>Gustave Flaubert\u2019s \u201c<em>Salammb\u00f4<\/em>\u201d is an often stirring mixture and intertwining of the history of the Punic Wars and of the myths held by the people of ancient Carthage. It includes some of the most erotic passages in 19th century literature, between the lovely and exotically beautiful Salammb\u00f4 and M\u00e2tho, the leader of the barbarians.<\/p>\n<p>In the scene created by Mucha, a priestess advises Salammb\u00f4 during a session of incantation, that without reobtaining the Za\u00efmph, Carthage is doomed.<\/p>\n<p>Unlike the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Les_Ma%C3%AEtres_de_l%27Affiche\"><em>Les M\u00e2itres de l\u2019Affiche<\/em><\/a> series, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/L%27Estampe_Moderne\"><em>L&#8217;Estampe Moderne <\/em><\/a>appeared in 1897-1899 as a series of 24 monthly <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Serial_(literature)\">fascicles<\/a>, with 4 original lithographs in each. Each commissioned only for this series.
