Afm. 41,5 x 52,5 cm.<\/p>\n<p>In\u00a0 het\u00a0 begin\u00a0 van\u00a0 de\u00a0 17de\u00a0 eeuw\u00a0 werd\u00a0 de\u00a0 stad\u00a0 voorzien\u00a0 van\u00a0 een\u00a0 aarden vestinggordel\u00a0 met\u00a0 bastions.\u00a0 De\u00a0 Dijk, een\u00a0 strook\u00a0 land\u00a0 ten\u00a0 noorden\u00a0 van\u00a0 de\u00a0 Thorbeckegracht,\u00a0 kwam\u00a0 nu\u00a0 binnen\u00a0 de\u00a0 omwalling\u00a0 te\u00a0 liggen\u00a0 doch\u00a0 bleef\u00a0 lange tijd\u00a0 slechts\u00a0 schaars\u00a0 bebouwd\u00a0 als gevolg\u00a0 van\u00a0 de\u00a0 slechte economische toestand. Vanwege\u00a0 de\u00a0 hier\u00a0 ontstane\u00a0 (op\u00a0 de\u00a0 scheepvaart\u00a0 gerichte)\u00a0\u00a0 bedrijvigheid\u00a0\u00a0 en\u00a0 uit\u00a0 militaire\u00a0 motieven\u00a0 werd\u00a0 het\u00a0 gebied\u00a0 binnen\u00a0 de\u00a0 beschermende\u00a0 omwalling\u00a0 getrokken.\u00a0 De\u00a0 nieuwe\u00a0 vestingwerken\u00a0 maakten\u00a0 Zwolle\u00a0 onderdeel\u00a0 van\u00a0 een\u00a0 linie,\u00a0 die\u00a0 vanaf\u00a0 Nieuwe\u00a0 Schans\u00a0 via\u00a0 Bourtange\u00a0 en\u00a0 Coevorden\u00a0 over\u00a0 Ommerschans\u00a0 en\u00a0 het\u00a0 fort\u00a0 Kijk\u00a0 in de Vecht\u00a0 naar\u00a0 de\u00a0 Ussellinie\u00a0 liep.\u00a0 In\u00a0 1621\u00a0 werd\u00a0 de\u00a0 vesting\u00a0 voltooid.\u00a0 De\u00a0 vestingwerken\u00a0 bestonden\u00a0 uit\u00a0 een aarden\u00a0 hoofdwal\u00a0 met\u00a0 elf\u00a0 bastions\u00a0 en\u00a0 een\u00a0 natte\u00a0 gracht.\u00a0 Daarbij\u00a0 lag\u00a0 er\u00a0 een\u00a0 hoornwerk\u00a0 voor\u00a0 de\u00a0 Sassenpoort\u00a0 en een\u00a0 ravelijn\u00a0 voor\u00a0 de\u00a0 Diezerpoort.\u00a0 Het\u00a0 eerste\u00a0 is\u00a0 nog\u00a0 altijd\u00a0 te\u00a0 herkennen\u00a0 in\u00a0 het\u00a0 trace\u00a0 van\u00a0 de\u00a0 Karnebeekstraat,\u00a0 de\u00a0 Zuiderkerkstraat en\u00a0 de Zeven Alleetjes.\u00a0 De\u00a0 plattegrond\u00a0 van\u00a0 Blaeu\u00a0 geeft\u00a0 een goed\u00a0 beeld van\u00a0 de\u00a0 17de-eeuwse\u00a0 vestingwerken\u00a0 van\u00a0 Zwolle, terwijl\u00a0 ook\u00a0 de\u00a0 middeleeuwse\u00a0 ommuring\u00a0 op\u00a0 deze\u00a0 kaart\u00a0 nog\u00a0 redelijk\u00a0 goed\u00a0 zichtbaar\u00a0 is. Het\u00a0 terrein\u00a0 tussen\u00a0 de voormalige\u00a0 dubbele\u00a0 zuidelijke\u00a0 stadsmuur \u00a0werd\u00a0 in\u00a0 deze tijd\u00a0 bij\u00a0 de\u00a0 aangrenzende\u00a0 huizen getrokken.\u00a0 Hier\u00a0 verrezen\u00a0 in de\u00a0 17de\u00a0 eeuw\u00a0 aan\u00a0 de\u00a0 zuidzijde\u00a0 van\u00a0 de\u00a0 Blijmarkt\u00a0 en\u00a0 de\u00a0 Koestraat\u00a0 royale\u00a0 herenhuizen.\u00a0 Walstraat,\u00a0 Koestraat\u00a0 en\u00a0 Blijmarkt\u00a0 vormen\u00a0 sinds eeuwen\u00a0 de\u00a0 zuidgrens\u00a0 van\u00a0 de\u00a0 stad. Voor\u00a0 de\u00a0 Koestraat\u00a0 kan\u00a0 men\u00a0 de\u00a0 bewoning\u00a0 traceren\u00a0 tot\u00a0 1 535. De\u00a0 zuidkant\u00a0 van\u00a0 de Walstraat\u00a0 blijkt\u00a0 als\u00a0 bouwgrond\u00a0 voor\u00a0 huizen\u00a0 pas\u00a0 in\u00a0 1581\u00a0 in\u00a0 gebruik\u00a0 te\u00a0 zijn\u00a0 genomen.\u00a0 In\u00a0 de\u00a0 binnenstad\u00a0 zelf werd\u00a0 na\u00a0 de\u00a0 hervorming\u00a0 het\u00a0 terrein\u00a0 van\u00a0 het\u00a0 Bethlehemklooster\u00a0 verkaveld\u00a0 en\u00a0 werd\u00a0 de\u00a0 Nieuwmarkt\u00a0 aangelegd, die\u00a0 een\u00a0 verbinding\u00a0 kreeg\u00a0 met\u00a0 de\u00a0 serie markten langs de Groote Aa.<\/p>\n<p>Linksboven het wapen van Overijssel, rechts dat van Zwolle. Links onderaan een legenda met belangrijke gebouwen. De legenda wordt versierd met afbeeldingen van vee, Zwolle had in de 17<sup>e<\/sup>-eeuw een belangrijk stapelmarkt waar vee werd verhandeld; en putti met rollen textiel, in die tijd kende de stad veel textielbedrijven.<\/p>\n<p>De Amsterdamse cartograaf en uitgever <a href=\"https:\/\/nl.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Joan_Blaeu\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Joan Blaeu<\/a> stelde zich tot taak de doelstellingen van eerdere uitgevers <a href=\"https:\/\/nl.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Abraham_Ortelius\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Abraham Ortelius<\/a> en <a href=\"https:\/\/nl.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Civitates_orbis_terrarum\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Georg Braun en Franz Hogenberg<\/a> tegelijk te realiseren, door aan zijn uit vele delen bestaande wereldatlas ook een aantal stedenboeken toe te voegen. Er kwamen stedenboeken op de markt van de noordelijke en zuidelijke Nederlanden en van Itali\u00eb. Helaas werd in 1672 Blaeu\u2019s werkplaats volledig door brand verwoest en stedenboeken van andere landen zijn nooit verschenen.
