Afm. ca. 24,5 x 34 cm.<\/p>\n<p>Het eiland Gor\u00e9e voor de kust van Senegal tegenover Dakar, werd in de 15e eeuw ontdekt door de Portugezen. In 1617 werd het gekoloniseerd door de Nederlanders, de <a href=\"https:\/\/nl.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/West-Indische_Compagnie\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">West-Indische Compagnie<\/a> (WIC) had het van Koning Biram van de Kaap Verdische Eilanden geschonken gekregen. De Nederlanders vernoemden het naar het Zuid-Hollandse voormalige eiland Goeree. De WIC bouwde twee forten op het eiland: Fort Nassau op de heuvel en Fort Oranje. <em>Daer leggen heden op dit eilant twee Forten of Krijgs-vestingen, het een aen het Noord-West-eind, op eenen hogen bergh, tamelijk sterk en gemetselt met dicht gevoegde stenen; het ander om laegh aen strant, het Fort Nassou genaemt, daar niet dan met boten en sloepen te landen is. Het Fort aen strant is groter, dan het bovenste, en begrijpt een Pak-huis, voor de Koopmanschappen en verscheidene woonplaetsen voor de krijgsknechten, en andere luiden in dienst van de Neerlantsche West-indische Kompagnie. <\/em>De forten maakten deel uit van de zgn. Bovenkust, de forten en factorijen die de West-Indische Compagnie had in het huidige Senegal. Het voornaamste doel van deze handelsposten was het ronselen van slaven die naar Amerika verscheept zouden worden. Het bestuur van het gebied zat op Gor\u00e9e.<\/p>\n<p>De Nederlanders verloren het eiland aan Engeland in 1663. Het jaar daarop heroverde <a href=\"https:\/\/nl.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Michiel_de_Ruyter\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Michiel de Ruyter<\/a> het. In 1677 kwam het eiland in Franse handen. In 1758 werd het weer Engels. Later kwamen de Fransen terug en voegden het bij hun kolonie Senegal, tot de onafhankelijkheid van Senegal in 1960.<\/p>\n<p>Van de 15e tot de 19e eeuw was Gor\u00e9e het grootste centrum van de slavenhandel aan de Afrikaanse kust.
