This\u00a0 highly\u00a0 decorative\u00a0 and\u00a0 rare\u00a0 separately-printed\u00a0 early\u00a0 18th<\/sup> Century\u00a0 map\u00a0 depicts\u00a0 the\u00a0 Kingdom\u00a0 of\u00a0 Hungary,\u00a0 which\u00a0 included\u00a0 all\u00a0 of\u00a0 the\u00a0 modern\u00a0 nation\u00a0 of\u00a0 Hungary,\u00a0 as\u00a0 well\u00a0 as\u00a0 parts\u00a0 of\u00a0 Slovakia, Romania,\u00a0 Serbia\u00a0 and\u00a0 Croatia. At the time of publication<\/a> Hungary was in the process of becoming a hereditary monarchy under the Habsburgs.<\/p>\n

The\u00a0 land\u00a0 is divided into\u00a0 the\u00a0 various counties and pictorially depicts the various fortified centres that guarded what had long been a frontier region between the Habsburg and Ottoman empires.<\/p>\n

This large map is highly detailed, with virtually every village,\u00a0 river\u00a0 and\u00a0 major\u00a0 road\u00a0 detailed. The\u00a0 work\u00a0 was\u00a0 separately\u00a0 published,\u00a0 although\u00a0 some\u00a0 examples\u00a0 were included in composite atlases.<\/p>\n

The map is grandly framed by 18 profile views of the region\u2019s major cities and towns (9 on each side), including Vienna, Presburg (Bratislava), Buda & Pest (Budapest), Belgrade, \u201cWaradien\u201d (Oradea, Romania),\u00a0 \u201cRaab\u201d\u00a0 (Gy\u0151r), \u00a0\u201cTockay\u201d\u00a0 (Tokaj),\u00a0 \u201cGrann\u201d\u00a0 (Esztergom),\u00a0 \u201cSigeth\u201d\u00a0 (Szigetv\u00e1r), \u201cTemeswar\u201d (Timi\u0219oara, Romania), \u201cErlaw\u201d (Eger), \u201cCassavia\u201d (Ko\u0161ice, Slovakia), \u201cGuila Feyrwar\u201d (Gyula), \u201cWatsew\u201d (V\u00e1c), Novigrad, \u201cKanischa\u201d (Nagykanizsa), \u201cFilleck\u201d and \u201cComora\u201d(Kom\u00e1rom).<\/p>\n

\u201cThis map and several other beautiful and correct maps of this size are sold for 9 pennies each at the toy and print shop in the corner house at Ludgate<\/a> street by G. Willdey. He also makes to the greatest perfection all sorts of spectacles, reading glasses, telescopes and perspective glasses. Note no person has more choice or can make better than his are.\u201d<\/p>\n

George Willdey (c. 1676-1737) was a flamboyant London shopkeeper with prestigious premises close to St. Paul’s Cathedral. He had broad commercial interests; his shop was stocked with all manner of goods and commodities, including snuff, clocks, globes, wallets, lanterns, a camera obscura, and many scientific instruments. However, the cartographic side of his business seems not to have been very successful, and few examples of his maps survived.<\/p>\n
