Later met de hand gekleurd. Afm. 51 x 59 cm.<\/p>\n<p>De aanwezigheid van de <a href=\"https:\/\/nl.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Vereenigde_Oostindische_Compagnie\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">VOC<\/a> op het Indisch Subcontinent duurde van 1605 tot 1825. De kooplieden van de VOC vestigden zich eerst langs de Kust van Coromandel, onder meer in Pulicat, waar ze textiel inkochten om deze te kunnen ruilen voor specerijen in <a href=\"https:\/\/nl.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Nederlands-Indi%C3%AB\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Nederlands Oost-Indi\u00eb<\/a>. In 1616 en 1627 vestigden de VOC-ers zich ook in respectievelijk Suratte en Bengalen. Nadat de VOC zich vanaf 1656 op Ceylon vestigde en daar de Portugezen verjoeg, volgde vijf jaar later ook de inname van Portugese forten langs de Malabarkust (Peperkust) teneinde een Portugese herovering van <a href=\"https:\/\/nl.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ceylon_(VOC-gebied)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ceylon<\/a> te voorkomen.<\/p>\n<p>Naast textiel handelden de VOC-ers in edelstenen, indigo en zijde op het Indisch Subcontinent, in salpeter en opium in <a href=\"https:\/\/nl.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bengalen_(gebied)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Bengalen<\/a> en in peper in Malabar. Indische slaven werden verscheept naar de Molukken en de Kaapkolonie.<\/p>\n<p>In de tweede helft van de 18e eeuw taande de invloed van de VOC in Voor-Indi\u00eb. Met het be\u00ebindigen van de VOC in 1798, werden VOC-bezittingen op het Indisch Subcontinent door de Britten overgenomen en verloren de Nederlanders in 1825 er hun laatste handelspost.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/nl.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Fran%C3%A7ois_Valentijn\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Fran\u00e7ois Valentijn<\/a> (1666-1727) was een dominee, natuurvorser en schrijver die vooral bekend is om zijn \u201cOud en Nieuw Oost-Indien\u201d, een geschiedenis van de Verenigde Oost-Indische Compagnie en haar activiteiten in Oost-Indi\u00eb. Valentijn\u2019s kaarten behoorden tot de meest nauwkeurige en grootschalige producties over Oost-Indi\u00eb tot dan toe gepubliceerd. Als officier had Valentijn toegang tot VOC documenten die hij compileerde tot een bijzondere collectie kaarten.
