Later met de hand gekleurd. Afm.: 45 x 55 cm.<\/p>\n<p>Al in 1615 kwamen de eerste VOC-schepen in Bengalen. Toch werd vanwege de voortdurende onrust in dit gebied de eerste permanente vestiging van de <a href=\"https:\/\/nl.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Vereenigde_Oostindische_Compagnie\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Verenigde Oostindische Compagnie<\/a> pas in 1627 in Pipely gesticht.<\/p>\n<p>In 1634 werd de hoofdvestiging verplaatst naar <a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/place\/Hugli-India\">Hugli<\/a> (\u201c<em>Oegli<\/em>\u201d op de kaart) , waar tot 1632 een Portugese vestiging was geweest. Aanvankelijk ressorteerde de in 1635 in de Ganges-delta aan de gelijknamige rivier gevestigde Bengaalse factorij Hougli (40 km ten noorden van het huidige Calcutta) onder <a href=\"https:\/\/inter-antiquariaat.nl\/antiek\/zeldzame-kaarten\/kaarten-wereld\/india-valentijn-1724-1726\/\">Coromandel<\/a>, maar doordat de factorij economisch steeds belangrijker werd, kreeg Bengalen vanaf 1655 een eigen directie. In 1656 is de loge door een stormvloed weggespoeld waarna in het iets zuidelijker gelegen Chinsura een nieuwe vestiging werd opgericht, die overigens officieel Hougli werd genoemd. Deze vestiging kreeg in 1687 een ommuring ter bescherming. In de jaren 40 van de 18e eeuw werd de vestiging versterkt tot een fort met vier hoekbastions op een rechthoekig grondplan.<\/p>\n<p>De Bengaalse producten, zijde, katoen, salpeter en opium, speelden een grote rol in het handelsverkeer. De VOC heeft tevergeefs geprobeerd een monopolie te verkrijgen op de handel in salpeter, grondstof voor buskruit.<\/p>\n<p>De kaart is vervaardigd in opdracht van <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rijksmuseum.nl\/nl\/collectie\/RP-P-OB-15.199\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mattheus van den Broucke<\/a> die van 1658 tot 1663 directeur was in Bengalen en Raad Ordinaris van Nederlands India.<\/p>\n<p>Prijs: VERKOCHT<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u201cNieuwe Kaarte van \u2019t Koninkryk Bengale \u201d, uit Fran\u00e7ois Valentijn\u2019s \u201cOud en Nieuw Oost-Indien\u201d, naar het ontwerp van Johan van Leenen, gegraveerd door Jan van Braam en uitgegeven te Dordrecht door Gerard onder de Linden in 1724-1726.
