De Nederlanders waren vanaf 1641 de enige Westerlingen die er mochten verblijven en handel drijven. Ze moesten zich wel aan strenge voorschriften houden, en mochten alleen op <a href=\"https:\/\/inter-antiquariaat.nl\/antiek\/verkocht\/dejima-isaac-tirion-ca-1740\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Dejima<\/a> wonen, een kunstmatig eiland in de haven van <a href=\"https:\/\/inter-antiquariaat.nl\/antiek\/verkocht\/nagasaki-dejima\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Nagasaki<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In 1858 hield het Nederlandse monopolie op en was het Dejima tijdperk voorbij. De Verenigde Staten, Groot Brittanni\u00eb, Frankrijk en Rusland kregen ook handelsrechten met Japan. De buitenlanders vestigden zich in Yokohama, dat zich snel ontwikkelde tot Japans belangrijkste haven. Ze hadden daar veel meer bewegingsvrijheid dan in Nagasaki. Ook vrouwen mochten er verblijven. Er ontwikkelde zich een internationale gemeenschap, waarin de Hollanders niet meer de belangrijksten waren.<\/p>\n<p>Nederlandse hulp werd wel nog ingeroepen voor het opbouwen van een Japanse marine en het bouwen van stoomschepen. De Nederlanders bouwen een machinefabriek, zetten een marineschool op en leiden Japanse marine officieren op.<\/p>\n<p>De hier getoonde houtsnedes zijn zgn. <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Yokohama-e\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Yokohama-e<\/a> prenten, gedrukt van een houtblok waarop buitenlanders staan afgebeeld in de havenstad Yokohama. Buitenlanders waren voor Japanners een bezienswaardigheid en de prenten voorzagen in een enorme behoefte. Prenten die in Yokohama gemaakt werden, zijn verfijnder dan vroegere prenten uit Nagasaki.
