Bruy\u00e8re (1884 &#8211; after 1959) was born in the French countryside, but her ambitious parents moved to the growing suburbs of Paris, where they prospered. They lived in chic Saint Gratien, where <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mathilde_Bonaparte\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Princesse Mathilde<\/a> (Napoleon I&#8217;s niece) also lived. She trained with <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Louise_Ch%C3%A9ruit\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Louise Cheruit<\/a> and then <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Jeanne_Lanvin\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Jeanne Lanvin<\/a>. In 1928 she opened her own &#8220;<em>Bruy\u00e8re Couture<\/em>&#8220;, and with her collection from the early 1930s she placed herself among the leading young designers of her time such as <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Elsa_Schiaparelli\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Schiaparelli<\/a>, Alix, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Rochas\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Rochas<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mainbocher\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Mainbocher<\/a>. Her fame grew internationally, which allowed her to open a grand salon on Place Vend\u00f4me in 1937.<\/p>\n<p>Her designs were also exported to the United States. In 1932, the name Bruy\u00e8re was the third best known in Manhattan stores (behind <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Madeleine_Vionnet\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Vionnet<\/a> and Lanvin).<\/p>\n<p>Her clothes were chic, very wearable and above all fashionable, striking with subtle and unusual design elements. With two shows a year of 200 models each, she had a huge production and in 1947 she had 328 employees.
