Smit &amp; Zn. en F.W. Greebe, uitgegeven door <strong>Johannes Allart<\/strong> in <strong>1802<\/strong>. Later met de hand gekleurd. Afm. 21 x 34,5 cm.<\/p>\n<p>Gezicht op Enkhuizen vanaf het water. Op het woelige water op de voorgrond een aantal zeilende schepen en sloepen die worden voortgeroeid. In de achtergrond de stad met links de haveningang met een havenlicht. In het midden, deels verscholen achter een zeil, de <a href=\"https:\/\/nl.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Drommedaris_(Enkhuizen)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Drommedaris<\/a> (in de 18<sup>e<\/sup>-eeuw nog Wilgenburg geheten). Voor de huizen zijn de masten van in de binnenhaven afgemeerde schepen te zien. Geheel rechts de toren van de <a href=\"https:\/\/nl.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Zuiderkerk_(Enkhuizen)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Zuiderkerk<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Enkhuizen was \u00e9\u00e9n van de belangrijkste Zuiderzeesteden. De stad telde de grootste haringvloot van de Nederlanden in de 17<sup>e<\/sup>-eeuw, en bezat een <a href=\"https:\/\/nl.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/De_Kamer_van_de_VOC_in_Enkhuizen\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">kamer van de VOC<\/a>. Ook de <a href=\"https:\/\/nl.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/West-Indische_Compagnie\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">West-Indische Compagnie<\/a> was in de stad vertegenwoordigd. Door handel op de Oostzeelanden, Engeland, West-Afrika en Indi\u00eb werd Enkhuizen rijk. Enkhuizen was in 1622 met bijna 22.000 inwoners de op vier na grootste stad van Holland. Er waren vele scheepsbouwbedrijven gevestigd waaronder zeilmakerijen, touwslagerijen en timmerwerkplaatsen.<\/p>\n<p>Eind 17e eeuw trad het verval in. De <a href=\"https:\/\/nl.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Engels-Nederlandse_Oorlogen\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">oorlogen met Engeland<\/a>, het verzanden van de havenmond en de concentratie van handel op Amsterdam zorgden ervoor dat Enkhuizen een van de sluimerende verstilde stadjes aan de Zuiderzee werd. Door de economische neergang daalde de bevolking sterk. De stadsuitlegging van de 16e eeuw bleek veel te ambitieus, en grote delen van de stad binnen de vestingwerken bleven onbebouwd.
