De gravure is in de tijd met de hand gekleurd. Afm.: 38,4 x 46,1 cm.<\/p>\n<p>In 1648 was met de <a href=\"https:\/\/nl.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Vrede_van_M%C3%BCnster\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Vrede van Munster<\/a> de <a href=\"https:\/\/nl.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tachtigjarige_Oorlog\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Tachtigjarige Oorlog<\/a> be\u00ebindigd. De <a href=\"https:\/\/nl.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Republiek_der_Zeven_Verenigde_Nederlanden\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Republiek der Verenigde Nederlanden<\/a> was een van de machtigste staten van Europa, welvarend, met een vloot die de zee\u00ebn beheerste. Toonaangevend was Amsterdam, het centrum van de wereldhandel. In het zuidelijk deel van de Republiek, aan de mond van Rijn en Maas, had Rotterdam zich ontwikkeld tot de tweede handels- en havenstad van de Nederlanden. In zekere zin zijn Amsterdam en Rotterdam als elkaars concurrenten te beschouwen, maar aan de andere kant had Rotterdam een heel eigen plaats in de economie van de Republiek, die eerder een aanvulling op de Amsterdamse handel en scheepvaart was. Zo waren voor Rotterdam vooral de relaties met Frankrijk en Engeland van belang. Met de economische betekenis was ook het economische gewicht van Rotterdam in de verhouding tot andere Hollandse steden toegenomen. Vanzelfsprekend was dit uitermate bevorderlijk voor het zelfbewustzijn van de bestuurders van de stad en de kringen waaruit deze voortkwamen; veranderingen in het stadsbeeld getuigen hier van.<\/p>\n<p>In de tweede helft van de 17e-eeuw stond Rotterdam op het hoogtepunt van zijn bloei. De oorlogen met Engeland en Frankrijk tastten de positie van de Nederlandse Republiek echter aan; ze maakten een eind aan de Nederlandse hegemonie op zee en berokkenden scheepvaart, handel en nijverheid veel schade. Duidelijk is dat ook de Rotterdamse economie hieronder te lijden had, wat niet wegneemt dat de verfraaiing van de stad en de afbeelding hiervan op kaarten en stadsgezichten tot het einde van de zeventiende eeuw bleven doorgaan.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/nl.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Johannes_Janssonius\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jo(h)annes Janssonius<\/a> was zoon van de Arnhemse uitgever Jan Janssen. Hij trouwde met de dochter van Amsterdamse uitgever <a href=\"https:\/\/nl.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Jodocus_Hondius\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jodocus Hondius<\/a> in 1612, waarna hij zich in de hoofdstad vestigde. Samen met Henricus Hondius, de zoon van Jodocus, geeft Janssonius de <em>Atlas Novus<\/em> uit en biedt daarmee concurrentie aan uitgeversfamilie <a href=\"https:\/\/nl.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Blaeu_(familie)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Blaeu<\/a>. Uiteindelijk verschijnen er van <em>Atlas Novus<\/em> 10 delen inclusief een zee atlas. Om zijn atlas aan te vullen geeft Janssonius evenals Blaeu een prachtig <a href=\"https:\/\/nl.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Stedenboeken\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Stedenboek<\/a> uit.<\/p>\n<p>Janssonius\u2019 oplages waren iets kleiner, misschien is het daarom dat zijn werk tegenwoordig minder bekend is, terwijl Blaeu zijn reputatie heeft kunnen handhaven. Vooral in oudere drukken echter is de kwaliteit van het werk van (Hondius-)Janssonius volstrekt niet de mindere van Blaeu.<\/p>\n<p>Johannes Janssonius overleed in 1662 en ligt begraven in de Amsterdamse Westerkerk.
