Iud. Hondio.<\/em><\/strong>\u201d Copper-engraved map from the \u201c<em>Th\u00e9\u00e2tre G\u00e9ographique Du Royaume de France\u2026<\/em>\u201d published in Paris by<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Melchior_Tavernier\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong> Melchior Tavernier<\/strong><\/a>, here in its second state of <strong>1636<\/strong>. Coloured by a later hand. Size: 39,0 x 57,5 cm (plus margins).<\/p>\n<p>This double hemisphere map is based on <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Jodocus_Hondius\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jodocus Hondius<\/a>&#8216; world map of 1617 or possibly Jacob Honervogt&#8217;s map of 1625, who also followed Jodocus Hondius\u2019map.\u00a0The ecliptic curves on Tavernier&#8217;s map are reversed so that the line is north of the equator in the western hemisphere and east of south of the equator in the eastern hemisphere.<\/p>\n<p>The map by Hondius was the first to show Le Maire&#8217;s Straits and the islands in the Pacific discovered by <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Jacob_Le_Maire\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jacob Le Maire<\/a> and his explorations in New Guinea. In North America, Hondius&#8217; map was also one of the earliest to delineate Hudson&#8217;s Bay, making special reference to <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Henry_Hudson\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Henry Hudson<\/a> and the Dutch and English expeditions there up to 1612. Hondius also extends the full course of the St. Lawrence river which now curiously runs across the continent, terminating in a large lake.<\/p>\n<p>Decoratively, the map is one of the most attractive. The corners contain scenes of the four seasons. <em>Ver<\/em> or Spring, shows gardeners tending a formal Dutch garden; <em>Aestas<\/em> or Summer is the time for sheep-shearing; Autumn brings the grape harvest in for wine-pressing; and in <em>Hyems<\/em> or Winter skaters revel on a frozen lake. On either side of north and south celestial hemispheres are recumbent figures representing the four elements: <em>Terra<\/em>, <em>Aqua<\/em>, <em>Ignis<\/em> and <em>Aer<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>The map in the cartouche on the right, is dedicated to the English mathematicians <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Henry_Briggs_(mathematician)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Henry Briggs<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Edward_Wright_(mathematician)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Edward Wright<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><em>Literature: The Mapping of the World, Rodney Shirley no. 337, plate 230. <\/em><\/p>\n<p>Price: Euro 9.500,- (incl. frame)<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>RARE AND STRIKINGLY BEAUTIFUL WORLD MAP \u201cNova Totius Terrarum Orbis Geographica ac Hydrographica Tabula auct.
