Smit &amp; Zn. en F.W. Greebe, uitgegeven door <strong>Johannes Allart<\/strong> in <strong>1802<\/strong>. Later met de hand gekleurd. Afm. 26 x 35,1 cm.<\/p>\n<p>We zien Hoorn vanaf het water. Op de voorgrond zeilende schepen. Daarachter een beschoeiing met rechts een <a href=\"https:\/\/nl.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Havenlicht\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">havenlicht<\/a>. Links aan de horizon een tweede havenlicht.<\/p>\n<p>Na de Slag op de Zuiderzee die in 1573 werd uitgevochten in de wateren voor Hoorn, breekt een periode van grote welvaart aan. Hoorn is het bestuurlijk centrum van West-Friesland. De Hollandse zeevaart breidt zich snel uit en men drijft handel over hele wereld. De <a href=\"https:\/\/nl.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Vereenigde_Oostindische_Compagnie\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Verenigde Oost-Indische Compagnie<\/a> heeft het monopolie voor de handel op Azi\u00eb. Hoorn is \u00e9\u00e9n van de zes steden waar de VOC een vestiging heeft, een \u2018<a href=\"https:\/\/nl.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/VOC-Kamer_Hoorn\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">kamer<\/a>.\u2019 Jaarlijks varen er schepen vanuit Hoorn naar Indi\u00eb, in opdracht van de VOC.<\/p>\n<p>In 1649 bereikte Hoorn met de laatste havenuitbreiding zijn grootste omvang. De stad telt dan 15 \u00e0 16.000 inwoners. Kort daarna begon een lange periode van economische achteruitgang en verval. Voor veel mensen is er armoede. De enige lichtpunten zijn de VOC, de kaasmarkt en de goud- en zilversmederijen die werkten voor de kleine groep van rijke Westfriezen die wonen aan de <a href=\"https:\/\/nl.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Grote_Oost_(Hoorn)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Grote Oost<\/a> en de Koepoortsweg.<\/p>\n<p>In 1795 trekken Franse revolutionaire troepen ook Hoorn binnen. 700 Franse militairen vestigen zich in de stad. De bevolking loopt terug naar 7.500 inwoners. Handelsactiviteiten worden gestaakt en er worden 1.600 huizen en pakhuizen gesloopt.
