{"id":25023,"date":"2021-01-04T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2021-01-03T23:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/inter-antiquariaat.nl\/dev-en\/antiek\/uncategorized\/the-hague-1690\/"},"modified":"2026-06-05T15:46:17","modified_gmt":"2026-06-05T13:46:17","slug":"the-hague-1690","status":"publish","type":"product","link":"https:\/\/inter-antiquariaat.nl\/en\/antiques\/sold\/the-hague-1690\/","title":{"rendered":"The Hague &#8211; Gregorio Leti (Joan Blaeu), 1690"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>\u201cHAGA COMITIS IN DE VOLKSMOND \u2018S GRAVEN-HAGE GEHETEN\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201c<strong><em>Hage Comitis, Vulgo \u2019s Graven-Hage<\/em><\/strong>\u201d, kopergravure, voor het eerst uitgegeven door <a href=\"https:\/\/nl.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Joan_Blaeu\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Joan Blaeu<\/a> in 1649, hier in een uitgave van <strong>Gregorio Leti<\/strong> als onderdeel van diens <em>Teatro Belgico<\/em> uit <strong>1690<\/strong>. Later met de hand gekleurd. Afm. (prent) 38,5 x 50,5 cm.<\/p>\n<p>Er werd druk gebouwd in de eerste helft van de 17<sup>de<\/sup>-eeuw want de Haagse bevolking maakte een expansieve groei door. Waren er in 1585 naar schatting nog zo\u2019n 7 \u00e0 8.000 inwoners \u2013 nauwelijks meer dan in 1500 -, in 1600 was dat aantal opgelopen tot 12.000 inwoners en in 1625 tot 18.000. Dat was onder meer te danken aan de komst van immigranten uit de <a href=\"https:\/\/nl.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Zuidelijke_Nederlanden\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Zuidelijke Nederlanden<\/a> en van plattelanders die in de stad een nieuw bestaan zochten.<\/p>\n<p>Op de plattegrond zien we Den Haag met het inmiddels voltooide grachtenstelsel. De Veerkaden werden als laatste gegraven: de gracht van de<a href=\"https:\/\/nl.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Amsterdamse_Veerkade\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> Amsterdamse Veerkade<\/a>, tussen <a href=\"https:\/\/nl.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Spui_(Den_Haag)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Spui<\/a> en <a href=\"https:\/\/nl.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Wagenstraat\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Wagenstraat<\/a>, ontstond in 1630; de Stille Veerkade, die in het verlengde ligt, pas in 1630. Toen pas was de bebouwing voldoende opgerukt. De groei in westelijke richting ging uiterst traag: de geplande straten bij het eind van de <a href=\"https:\/\/nl.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Prinsegracht\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Prinsegracht<\/a> zijn nauwelijks gerealiseerd. Het bleven open ruimten die pas in de 19<sup>de<\/sup> eeuw werden opgevuld.<\/p>\n<p>Gregorio Leti (1630\u20131701) was geschiedschrijver en satiricus, geboren in Milaan en later ge\u00ebmigreerd naar Engeland. Hij schreef voor Charles II een geschiedenis van Engeland, maar vluchtte 1685 naar Amsterdam vanwege het beledigen van zijn opdrachtgever. In Holland werkte hij aan zijn \u201c<em>Teatro Belgico<\/em>\u201d, een boek over de geschiedenis van de Zeven Provinci\u00ebn.<\/p>\n<p>Voor het drukken van deze plattegrond had Leti de hand weten te leggen op een koperplaat van Joan Blaeu die eigendom was van<a href=\"https:\/\/nl.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Frederik_de_Wit\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> Frederick de Wit<\/a>. De Wit had een deel van de koperen platen uit de boedel van Blaeu overgenomen en gaf deze onder eigen naam uit. Maar De Wit heeft Blaeu\u2019s kaart van de Haag opnieuw laten graveren en daarbij het kaartbeeld aangevuld.
