Signed and dated in the lower left \u201c<em>J. Sipkes, <\/em><strong><em>1831<\/em><\/strong>\u201d. Size approx. 11,5 x 14,5 cm. (In frame: 29,5 x 34 cm.)<\/p>\n<p>A galiot was a type of Dutch or German merchant ship of 20 to 400 tons (<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Builder%27s_Old_Measurement\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">bm<\/a>), with a rounded fore and aft like a <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Fluyt\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">fluyt<\/a>. Galiots had nearly flat bottoms to sail in shallow waters. These ships were especially favored for coastal navigation in the North and Baltic seas. To avoid excessive <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Leeway\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">leeway<\/a>, or <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Leeward\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">leeward<\/a> drift due to their flat bottoms, smaller vessels were usually fitted with <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Leeboard\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">leeboards<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Little is known about the marine painter Joseph Sipkes (1787-1852) except that he worked in Amsterdam at the beginning of the 19th century.
