Size. approx. 12,2 x 17,7 cm.<\/p>\n<p>A xebec was a Mediterranean sailing ship that was used mostly for trading. Xebecs had a long overhanging <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bowsprit\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">bowsprit<\/a> and aft-set mizzen <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mast_(sailing)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">mast<\/a>. Nineteenth century xebecs had three <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mast_(sailing)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">masts<\/a> and featured a distinctive <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hull_(watercraft)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">hull<\/a> with pronounced overhanging <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bow_(ship)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">bow<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Stern\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">stern<\/a>. They rarely <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Displacement_(fluid)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">displaced<\/a> more than 200 tons, making them slightly smaller and with slightly fewer guns than <a href=\"https:\/\/inter-antiquariaat.nl\/en\/antiques\/miscellaneous\/maritime-prints-drawings\/four-frigates-19th-century\/\">frigates<\/a> of the period. Xebecs were generally faster than contemporary ship types until the introduction of <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Steamship\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">steamships<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Little is known about the marine painter Joseph Sipkes (1787-1852) except that he worked in Amsterdam at the beginning of the 19th century.
