Afm. ca. 10,5 x 13,7 cm.<\/p>\n<p>Bij de eerste stoomboten (vanaf 1807) dreef een stoommachine een <a title=\"Scheprad\" href=\"https:\/\/nl.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Scheprad\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">scheprad<\/a> aan (<a title=\"Raderstoomboot\" href=\"https:\/\/nl.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Raderstoomboot\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">raderstoomboot<\/a>). (Vanaf 1836 kwam het schroefstoomschip (stoomboot met scheepsschroef) op.)<\/p>\n<p>In de stoommachine werd water werd verhit tot stoom dat de kracht leverde voor de aandrijving van het schoepenrad. Aangezien zeewater niet geschikt was voor een stoommachine, hadden zeeschepen een installatie om de stoom weer tot water te condenseren en opnieuw te gebruiken. Als brandstof werd aanvankelijk steenkool gebruikt.<\/p>\n<p>In het midden van de 19e eeuw werden stoomboten nog niet als schepen gezien. Een Rotterdamse \u201cOrdonnantie inzake diepgeld\u201d (wat wij nu een havengeldverordening zouden noemen) maakte uitdrukkelijk onderscheid tussen \u201cstoombooten, schepen en andere vaartuigen\u201d. Die \u201cschepen\u201d waren zeilschepen.<\/p>\n<p>Van marineschilder Joseph Sipkes (1787-1852) is weinig meer bekend dan dat hij in Amsterdam werkzaam was aan het begin van de 19<sup>de<\/sup>-eeuw.
