Afm. (papier): 12,5 x 22,7 cm.<\/p>\n<p>We zien de Waterkant te Paramaribo met rechts <a href=\"https:\/\/nl.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Fort_Zeelandia_(Suriname)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Fort Zeelandia<\/a>, in het midden het Gouverneurshuis (tegenw.: <a href=\"https:\/\/nl.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Presidentieel_paleis_van_de_Republiek_Suriname\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Presidentieel Paleis<\/a>) en links (met de toren) het Gebouw van Financi\u00ebn (tegenw. <a href=\"https:\/\/nl.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ministerie_van_Financi%C3%ABn_(gebouw)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ministerie van Financi\u00ebn<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Paramaribo had geen echte haven, eigenlijk was de hele Waterkant haven. Bij vloed konden schepen overal aanleggen, bij eb waren er drie punten verspreid over de kade waar men zogenoemde landingsplaatsen had ingericht. Er waren een steiger en voorzieningen om aan te meren, zodat de lading kon worden gelost en overgeslagen op kleinere schepen die met hun geringere diepgang de rivieren op konden varen.<\/p>\n<p>Alfred Bowyer Clayton (1795-1855) was in de leer als historieschilder bij <a href=\"https:\/\/nl.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/William_Etty\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">William Etty<\/a> en exposeerde tussen 1814-1837 in de Royal Academy. Van zijn hand zijn vele gravures, maar hij werkte vanaf begin 1830 als lithograaf. Clayton vervaardigde in 1831 een serie lithografische prenten van de toen nieuwe Liverpool-Manchester-spoorweg.
