Verso: Franse tekst. Later met de hand gekleurd. Afm.: 35 x 46,4 cm.<\/p>\n<p>Tussen 1339 en 1795 omvatte het Hertogdom Gelre de huidige provincie Gelderland en Noord-Limburg. Het strekte zich ook uit over een klein deel van het noorden van de huidige bondsstaat Noordrijn-Westfalen. Gelre was verdeeld in vier kwartieren, samen vormden zij de Staten van de Kwartieren: het <a href=\"https:\/\/nl.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Kwartier_van_Veluwe\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">kwartier van Veluwe<\/a>, het <a href=\"https:\/\/nl.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Kwartier_van_Nijmegen\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">kwartier van Nijmegen<\/a>, het <a href=\"https:\/\/nl.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Graafschap_Zutphen\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">kwartier van Zutphen<\/a> en het Overkwartier (<a href=\"https:\/\/nl.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Opper-Gelre\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">kwartier van Roermond<\/a>). Door de <a href=\"https:\/\/nl.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tachtigjarige_Oorlog\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Tachtigjarige Oorlog<\/a> werd het Overkwartier van Gelre afgesplitst. De drie noordelijke kwartieren sloten zich aan bij de <a href=\"https:\/\/nl.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Unie_van_Utrecht_(geschiedenis)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Unie van Utrecht<\/a> (1579) en werden deel van de <a href=\"https:\/\/nl.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Republiek_der_Zeven_Verenigde_Nederlanden\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Republiek der Zeven Verenigde Nederlanden<\/a>. Het Overkwartier werd na 1591 deel van de <a href=\"https:\/\/nl.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Zuidelijke_Nederlanden\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Zuidelijke Nederlanden<\/a>, het staat dus inmiddels niet meer op deze kaart van Gerard Mercator.<\/p>\n<p>In 1528 werd de naam Overijssel voor het eerst gebruikt voor het gebied van de huidige provincie Overijssel. Voor die tijd sprak men van <a href=\"https:\/\/nl.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Oversticht\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Oversticht<\/a>, dat echter al in 1233 in het Latijn met Transysla\/Transisalania (letterlijk: <em>Over-IJssel<\/em>) werd aangeduid. Dit gebied werd bestuurd door de <a href=\"https:\/\/nl.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sticht_Utrecht\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">bisschop van Utrecht<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Het Oversticht bestond uit het land van Vollenhove, Salland, Twente en Drenthe. De bisschop van <a href=\"https:\/\/nl.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Aartsbisdom_Utrecht_(rooms-katholiek)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Utrecht<\/a> stond in 1528 het Sticht (Utrecht) en het Oversticht af aan <a href=\"https:\/\/nl.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Keizer_Karel_V\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">keizer Karel V<\/a>. De <a href=\"https:\/\/nl.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Staten\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">staten<\/a> van Overijssel werden gevormd door de <a href=\"https:\/\/nl.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hanzesteden\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Hanzesteden<\/a> Deventer, Kampen en Zwolle en de ridderschappen van Salland, Twente en Vollenhove.<\/p>\n<p>Het gewest, dat sinds <a href=\"https:\/\/nl.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Nederlandse_Opstand\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">de opstand<\/a> tegen <a href=\"https:\/\/nl.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Filips_II_van_Spanje\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Filips II<\/a> deel uitmaakte van de <a href=\"https:\/\/nl.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Republiek_der_Zeven_Verenigde_Nederlanden\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Republiek der Zeven Verenigde Nederlanden<\/a>, werd bestuurd door de burgemeesters van de grote steden en de leden van de ridderschappen. Afzonderlijke kaarten van Overijssel zijn er tot aan het begin van de 17<sup>e<\/sup>-eeuw nauwelijks, maar wordt het afgebeeld in combinatie met de vier noordelijke provincies, met Drenthe of zoals in dit geval met Gelderland.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/nl.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Gerard_Mercator\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Gerardus Mercator<\/a> (1512 &#8211; 1594) was een Vlaamse cartograaf,\u00a0instrumentmaker\u00a0en\u00a0graveur. Hij paste als eerste een hoekgetrouwe kaartprojectie toe, later naar hem\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/nl.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mercatorprojectie\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Mercatorprojectie\u00a0<\/a>genoemd. Hij introduceerde het woord atlas. De koperen platen uit de nalatenschap van Mercator komen rond 1604 in Handen van <a href=\"https:\/\/nl.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Jodocus_Hondius\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Jodocus Hondius<\/a> (1563-1612) die in de Kalverstraat in Amsterdam zijn uitgeverij &#8216;Inde Wackeren Hondt&#8217; had. Zijn met nieuwe kaarten aangevulde atlas is de zgn. Mercator-Hondius Atlas.
