Degres de Latitude.<\/em><\/strong>\u201d (The two poles \u2013 Arctic on the northern hemisphere, and Antarctic on the southern, as well as the description of the Arctic and Antartic earth and the surrounding lands up until 45 degrees latitude.) Copper engraving published by <strong>Pieter Mortier<\/strong> in Amsterdam after the design by <strong>Nicolas Sanson<\/strong>. The map was included in Pieter Mortier&#8217;s <em>Atlas Nouveau <\/em>in <strong>1696<\/strong>. With original hand colouring. Size: approx. 43 x 52 cm.<\/p>\n<p>This is a beautiful example of <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Pieter_Mortier\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Pieter Mortier<\/a>&#8216;s double-hemisphere map of the north and south poles. The primary hemispheres focus on the northern and southern thirds of the world. The secondary hemispheres show the entire world, centered respectively on Paris and its antipodes.<\/p>\n<p>The geographical content of the primary hemispheres is drawn from the 1657 map of French cartographer <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Nicolas_Sanson\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Nicolas Sanson<\/a> (whose title is shared by the present work.) These do not constitute a world map per se. The polar projections end at 45\u00ba south and north respectively. The southern polar projection on the right is dominated by a massive southern continent, marked \u201c<em>Terre Magellanique Australe et Incogneue<\/em>\u201d (the southern and unknown land of Magellanica.)<\/p>\n<p>The northern hemisphere shows Europe north of central France and the Black Sea, Asia north of the Caspian Sea and <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Turkestan\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Turkestan<\/a>, and Spitzbergen and Nova Zemla are shown as partial coastlines. North America shows the Great Lakes in their unfinished form. The northern part of North America is shown including the Saint Lawrence River, Newfoundland, and the Canadian Maritimes. Hudson&#8217;s Bay, Button&#8217;s Bay, Baffin&#8217;s Bay, and the Davis Strait are all shown, with numerous openings in the coastline suggesting the possibility of a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/place\/Northwest-Passage-trade-route\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Northwest Passage<\/a>. Greenland is shown as a landmass contiguous with North America, and nearly connecting with <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Svalbard\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Spitzbergen<\/a>. Additionally, the North American landmass reaches westward to include the speculative \u201c<em>Terre de Yezo, ou Iesso<\/em>\u201d, which contemporaneous cartographers presented as beginning as the island of <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hokkaido\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Hokkaido<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The decorative elements &#8211; up to and including the framing of the secondary hemispheres, and the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cartouche_(cartography)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">cartouche<\/a> banner &#8211; are copied from <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Nicolaes_Visscher_I\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Nicolas Visscher<\/a>\u2019s world map of 1658. Visscher&#8217;s artist &#8211; the Dutch painter <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Nicolaes_Pieterszoon_Berchem\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Nicolaes Berchem<\/a> &#8211; created nuanced, layered allegorical scenes representing each of the four elements in the map&#8217;s four corners. The scene for &#8216;Air&#8217; in the upper right corner shows <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Zeus\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Zeus<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hera\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Hera<\/a> in a chariot pulled by eagles, with putti flying in attendance. For &#8216;Earth&#8217;, in a woodland scene at the bottom right, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Demeter\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Demeter<\/a> gifts a hungry mankind the fruits of the Earth, in an overflowing <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cornucopia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">cornucopia<\/a>. The scene representing &#8216;Fire&#8217; in the upper left corner takes place in the underworld, showing the abduction of <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Persephone\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Persephone<\/a> by <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hades\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Hades<\/a>. In the aquatic scene in the lower left, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Poseidon\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Poseidon<\/a> woos <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Aphrodite\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Aphrodite<\/a> in a hippocampus-drawn chariot, with mermen bugling wetly from <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Conch\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">conches<\/a> and playing tambourines.<\/p>\n<p>The top ancillary hemisphere is flanked by angelic figures, while the bottom is flanked by a mermaid (facing the water scene) and a <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Satyr\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">satyr<\/a> facing the Earth vignette.
