In de tijd met de hand gekleurd. \u00a0Verso: Nederlandse tekst. Afm. 41 x 51,5 cm.<\/p>\n<p>De 17e eeuw betekende in economisch opzicht ook voor Vlissingen een Gouden Eeuw. Antwerpen werd beschouwd als vijandelijk gebied en daardoor werd Vlissingen belangrijker als havenstad. De handel floreerde mede door de oprichting van de <a href=\"https:\/\/nl.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Vereenigde_Oostindische_Compagnie\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">VOC<\/a> en de <a href=\"https:\/\/nl.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/West-Indische_Compagnie\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">WIC<\/a>. Ook bleef, als altijd de <a href=\"https:\/\/nl.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Kaapvaart\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">kaapvaart<\/a> een lucratieve bezigheid. De in Vlissingen gevestigde scheepswerf van de <a href=\"https:\/\/nl.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Admiraliteit_van_Zeeland\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Admiraliteit van Zeeland<\/a> voorzag de handelsvloot van schepen.<\/p>\n<p>De stad werd planmatig uitgebreid volgens een rechthoekig stratenpatroon. <a href=\"https:\/\/nl.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Willem_van_Oranje\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Willem van Oranje<\/a> bouwde er het Prinsenhuis (afgebrand in 1749). In 1594 werd op de Grote Markt een nieuw stadhuis gebouwd; een iets kleinere uitvoering van het <a href=\"https:\/\/nl.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Stadhuis_van_Antwerpen\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">stadhuis van Antwerpen<\/a>. Het <a href=\"https:\/\/nl.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Beursgebouw_(Vlissingen)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">beursgebouw<\/a> dateert van 1635. In het begin van de 17e eeuw werd de stad op last van <a href=\"https:\/\/nl.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Maurits_van_Oranje\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">prins Maurits<\/a> voorzien van een nieuw vestingstelsel bestaande uit acht <a href=\"https:\/\/nl.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bastion\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">bastions<\/a> die rond de stad lagen. Binnen de nieuwe omwalling werd de Dok- of Oosterhaven gegraven waar al gauw timmerwerven en <a href=\"https:\/\/nl.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Touwslager\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">touwslagerijen<\/a> ontstonden. In haven konden daarna \u201cettelijke honderden grote schepen liggen van storm en ijsgang bevrijd\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>De stad werd bestuurd door een baljuw, twee burgemeesters, negen schepenen en dertien raden. Daarnaast waren een pensionaris, een secretaris, twee weesmeesters (belast met het toezicht op de wezen en weeshuizen), vier thesauriers, drie commissarissen en een \u2018schout van het landrecht\u2019.
