Winterse voorstellingen met een dik pak sneeuw en bevroren vaarten en rivieren vol ijsplezier waren altijd al geliefd. De oude meesters schilderden ze graag en hun populariteit weerspiegelt zich in de grote aantallen prenten die naar hun schilderijen en ontwerpen zijn gemaakt. Tot in de 19e eeuw grepen graveurs terug op voorbeelden van voorheen, ook in Frankrijk, Duitsland en Engeland.<\/p>\n

IJscolf<\/a> is een sport die vanaf de Middeleeuwen gespeeld werd in de Lage Landen. In de 17e en 18e eeuw nam het colfspel sterk in populariteit toe. Meestal werd het spel op dagelijkse schoenen gespeeld te midden van het op het ijs aanwezige andere publiek. Soms maakte men gebruik van een colfstok met een verzwaard en verbreed ondereind, niet langer dan onze huidige golfclub, dan weer stond men op schaatsen en reikte de stok tot borsthoogte en was het boveneind met fluweel of ander materiaal bekleed.<\/p>\n

Soms ging het er om wie het verste kon slaan of om een paal te raken. De puntentelling werd bijgehouden op de binnenkant van de hoed of werd met een mes op een takje gekerfd. Het balletje was gemaakt van leer en gevuld met veren.<\/p>\n
