Kopergravure uit <strong>Lodovico Guicciardini<\/strong>&#8216;s &#8220;<em>Descrittione di tutti i Paesi Bassi<\/em>&#8221; (tussen 1612 en 1648 ook verschenen onder de Nederlandse titel &#8220;<em>Beschrijvinghe van alle de Nederlanden<\/em> <em>anderssins ghenoemt Neder-Duytslandt<\/em>&#8220;), uitgegeven door <strong>Christoffel Plantijn<\/strong> te Antwerpen in <strong>1582<\/strong> (of 1588). Later met de hand gekleurd. Afm.: 23,3 x 31 cm.<\/p>\n<p>We zien de Nijmegen met het <a href=\"https:\/\/nl.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Valkhof\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Valkhof<\/a> rechts binnen de stadsmuren. In het centrum van de stad de grote gotische <a href=\"https:\/\/nl.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Grote_of_Sint-Stevenskerk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sint Stevenskerk<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Vanaf de veertiende eeuw werden er bijna dertig grote en kleine poorten in de Nijmeegse stadsmuur gebouwd. De muren en poorten vormden het grootste, duurste en indrukwekkendste bouwwerk dat door de stad was neergezet. Ook de gehele Waalkade werd voorzien van een stadsmuur met daarin verschillende stadspoorten. Op de kaart van oost naar west (rechts naar links) zijn daarvan aangeduid de <a href=\"https:\/\/mijngelderland.nl\/inhoud\/routes\/nijmegen-oudste-stad-van-nederland\/veerpoort\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Veerpoort<\/a>, de <a href=\"https:\/\/www.noviomagus.nl\/h1.php?p=OudNijmegen\/Stadswallen\/Kraanpoort\/Kraanpoort.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Kraanpoort<\/a>, &#8220;<em>die cleijn portijen<\/em>&#8221; (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.santiago.nl\/jacobalia\/sint-jacobspoort-4\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sint-Jacobspoort<\/a>), de Meipoort en de <a href=\"https:\/\/www.noviomagus.nl\/OudNijmegen\/Stadswallen\/Boddelpoort\/Boddelpoort.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Boddelpoort<\/a>. Deze poorten waren van \u2018s avond laat tot vroeg in de ochtend gesloten en hadden naast hun beveiligende functie vaak ook nog een andere bestemming, zoals opslagplaats of gevangenis. Aan beide uiteinden van de Waalkade stonden grote torens: aan de oostkant de Melaten- of Lappentoren en op de westelijke hoek de St. Hubertus- of Rode Toren. Aan voet van het Valkhof (&#8220;<em>Des Wallicks hoff<\/em>&#8220;) stond de Stratemakerstoren, met daarin een batterij kanonnen, die de Waal en de nabijgelegen delen van de Waalkade bestreken. In de 16de eeuw werd de stadsmuur aan de kade vervangen door huizen. Het stadsbestuur stelde daarbij echter wel strenge eisen aan de bebouwing op deze strategisch belangrijke plek: aan de rivierzijde moesten alle vensters in de extra dikke muren zijn voorzien van tralies en deuren waren er strikt verboden. Deze regels werden pas vanaf 1849 versoepeld. In 1874 werd de vesting Nijmegen opgeheven en gingen de meeste torens, stadspoorten en -muren al gauw tegen de vlakte.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/nl.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Lodovico_Guicciardini\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Guicciardini<\/a> (1521 \u2013 1589) was een Italiaanse koopman en leefde als diplomaat van de <a href=\"https:\/\/nl.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Medici\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Medici<\/a>\u2019s in Antwerpen. Guicciardini was een man met brede kennis en belangstelling. In zijn <em>Discrittione<\/em> gaat hij in op verschillende aspecten van de Nederlanden; het land en het landschap, de rivieren en de zee, de bossen, de bewoners en hun geaardheid en gewoonten, de economie en handel, de staatsinrichting, de kerkelijke activiteiten, de schilderkunst, de muziek, etc. Wetenswaardigheden die voor een toenmalige reiziger zeer interessant moeten zijn geweest. Hij zweeg echter over de oorlogsperikelen waar de Nederlanden door geteisterd werden.
