\u201cDe bedotte Kees<\/strong>\u201d, ets met gravure vervaardigd door een anonieme kunstenaar in 1787<\/strong>. Later met de hand gekleurd. Afm.: ca. 19,7 x 14,8 cm.<\/p>\n

Hier bespotten de orangisten de patriotten vanwege het niet opdagen van Franse hulp en het opmarcheren van de Pruissen<\/a>. De keeshond (patriotten werden kezen genoemd) in uniform laat z\u2019n schouders hangen en houdt zijn geweer zo dat de Franse haan er over naar boven klimt en de hem een bril op de neus zet.<\/p>\n

Op de grond liggen vier proclamaties over verwachte Franse steun: \u201cAlliantie met Frankrijk\u201d, \u201cDelfsche Declaratoir\u201d, \u201cLyst van de Fransche hulptroepen te Givet\u201d [die dus nooit kwamen] en \u201cDefensie der Stad Utrecht door den Rhijn-Graaf Salm\u201d. Over dat laatste: de Rijngraaf van Salm<\/a> was hoofd van de patriotse milities in Utrecht, maar vlucht als in september 1787 een Pruisisch leger de stad in trekt.<\/p>\n

Onder een de voorstelling een (hier hertaalde) verklarende vers:<\/p>\n

\u201cWel Kees, wat ben je fijn bedot!
\nDaar sta je dan voor Piet Snot,
\nte kijken naar uw plannen en helden,
\nHet een en ander was schelmerij [=bedrog];
\nu bracht u zelf en het land in lij [=gevaar].
\nDat men u al te vaak voorspelde.
\nSteek uw neus uit, kijk door deze bril,
\nhet volkje van de vrije wil.
\nZweer dat deze fijn geslepen glazen,
\nmet al uw helden en haar plans [=plannen],
\ngefabriceerd zijnde op z\u2019n Frans.
\nJa kees, de Fransen zijn in het plannen smeden bazen [=maar ze doen dus niet wat ze beloven].\u201d<\/p>\n
