Gesigneerd met potlood door Alma-Tadema en Blanchard. Later met de hand gekleurd. Afm. 25,8 x 19,8 cm.<\/p>\n<p>Een jonge Romeinse vrouw hoort gefluit en ziet haar geliefde met wie zij aan de <a href=\"https:\/\/nl.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Dionysia_(Griekenland)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Dionysische festiviteiten<\/a> zal deelnemen. De Romeinse autoriteiten probeerden herhaaldelijk dergelijke Dionysische rituelen \u2013 in duidelijker Nederlands: bacchanalen \u2013 tevergeefs onder controle te krijgen. Toen het schilderij voor het eerst werd tentoongesteld in de <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Grosvenor_Gallery\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Grosvenor Gallery<\/a> in 1878, was het vergezeld van een po\u00ebziefragment van <a href=\"https:\/\/nl.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Edmund_Gosse\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Edmund Gosse<\/a>, de zwager van Alma-Tadema:<\/p>\n<p><em>She hears the marble floor repeat,<br \/>\n<\/em><em>A measured sound of leopards\u2019 feet,<br \/>\n<\/em><em>Nor hardly dares for sweet desire<br \/>\n<\/em><em>To give her wild heart time to beat.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>De compositie vangt de vrouw spontaan, in een schitterend marmeren interieur versierd met reli\u00ebfsculpturen, een teken wellicht dat ze een dochter is uit een rijke patrici\u00ebrsfamilie.
