Maar toen eindelijk de brandspuiten in gebruik werden genomen, werd het vuur snel geblust en bleef het schip zoals hier afgebeeld gespaard.\u201d Kopergravure uitgegeven in <strong>1735<\/strong> door de <strong>Erven Jan van der Heijden<\/strong> als deel van de \u201c<em>Beschryving der nieuwlyks uitgevonden en geoctrojeerde Slang-Brand-Spuiten, en haare wyze van Brand-Blussen, Tegenwoordig binnen Amsterdam in gebruik zijnde.<\/em>\u201d Later met de hand gekleurd. Afm.: 27,4 x 31,5 cm.<\/p>\n<p>Eeuwen lang was het blussen van branden een kwestie van lange rijen mensen, die emmertjes water aan elkaar doorgaven. Pas toen het stadhuis van Amsterdam op 7 juli 1652 afbrandde, werd er een nieuw tijdperk ingeluid. De stad schafte kort daarop 58 handbrandspuiten aan en de toen 15-jarige jongeman <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?sa=t&amp;rct=j&amp;q=&amp;esrc=s&amp;source=web&amp;cd=&amp;ved=2ahUKEwiqmZ-UmcP3AhWXD-wKHd4eBPwQFnoECAQQAQ&amp;url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.brandweer.org%2Fwp-content%2Fuploads%2F2020%2F01%2Fart-eet1-wbh-07-biografie-JanvanderHeijden-04.pdf&amp;usg=AOvVaw1AQCs6MHoR1VHbcQW5MQAZ\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Jan Goriszoon van der Heijden<\/a> was getuige van de brand.<\/p>\n<p>Van der Heijden bedacht later een brandweerpomp met waterslangen, waardoor die emmerketens overbodig werden. Aan de toen in gebruik zijnde tobbe met spuitmond werden een \u2018zuigpomp\u2019 en lederen brandslangen toegevoegd. Het benodigde water kon daarmee direct uit de gracht opgezogen worden (als filter tegen het vuil diende een gevlochten mandje), terwijl de brandslangen de spuitgasten in staat stelden het water ook via trappen of gangen naar boven of binnen te pompen gepompt, zodat het water ook bij kleine branden al inzetbaar was en het vuur gericht kon worden bestreden.<\/p>\n<p>Al kort na de invoering van deze verbeteringen werden de zuigpomp en de brandspuit gecombineerd tot een enkel apparaat. De dubbele pompwerking had een \u2018dood\u2019 moment tot gevolg, halverwege de slag. Om dit op te vangen werd al snel een extra drukvat aangebracht.
