In de tijd met de hand gekleurd. Afm. ca. 52 x 38 cm.<\/p>\n<p>Het titelcartouche is versierd met het <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wikiwand.com\/nl\/Wapen_van_Gelderland\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">wapen van het hertogdom Gelre<\/a> en het fruit dat het land rijk was. Het wapen met de dubbelkoppige adelaar, boven de legenda, is van <a href=\"https:\/\/nl.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Keizer_Karel_V\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Karel V<\/a> die medio 16<sup>e<\/sup>-eeuw hertog van Gelre was.<\/p>\n<p>Tijdens de <a href=\"https:\/\/nl.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tachtigjarige_Oorlog\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Tachtigjarige Oorlog<\/a> verlieten de mensen het platteland. Vanuit Zutphen en Deventer stroopten de Spanjaarden het land af, waarbij bevolking geld en goederen werden ontnomen. Boerderijen waren regelmatig het doelwit van plunderende soldaten. Veel Veluwse boeren trokken naar ommuurde steden, zoals Harderwijk, Elburg en Zutphen. De schapen die werden achtergelaten, vielen ten prooi aan de wolven die er in groten getale rondzwierven.<\/p>\n<p>Het kaartbeeld is direct ontleend aan de kaart van Gelderse landmeter <a href=\"https:\/\/nl.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Nicolaes_van_Geelkercken\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Nicolaas van Geelkercken<\/a> uit het werk van <a href=\"https:\/\/nl.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Johannes_Isacus_Pontanus\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Isaac Pontanus<\/a> (1639). Janssonius was bekend met de kaarten van Van Geelkercken uit de \u201c<em>Historiae Gelricae<\/em>\u201d, die hij zelf had uitgegeven.<\/p>\n<p>De kaart verscheen in het 4e en laatste deel van \u201c<em>The English Atlas<\/em>\u201d. Deze atlas was het ambitieuze project van de Engelsman Moses Pitt waar hij in 1670 aan begonnen was. Pitt die noch wetenschapper, noch cartograaf was, wilde een atlas publiceren in 12 delen, die mooier en groter zou worden dan de \u201c<em>Atlas Maior<\/em>\u201d van Joan Blaeu. De kaarten werden gedrukt van de koperplaten die hij die hij verkregen had van <a href=\"https:\/\/nl.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Johannes_Janssonius\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Johannes Janssonius<\/a>\u2019 erven, Johannes Janssonius van Waesberge en Steven Swart.<\/p>\n<p>Hoewel een flink aantal mensen had ingetekend en het project onder auspici\u00ebn stond van de Royal Society, kon hij niet tippen aan de Amsterdamse uitgevers die de markt al decennia lang domineerden. Pitt had het project onderschat en het ontbrak hem uiteindelijk aan financi\u00eble middelen en voldoende kennis om het tot een succes te maken.<\/p>\n<p>Het project liep uit op een fiasco en slechts 4 delen van de atlas werden gepubliceerd. Van het 5e deel is enkel de tekst verschenen.
