Claesz., then by Johan Baptist Vrients, and in this case by <strong>Arbaham Ortelius<\/strong> in <strong>1606 <\/strong>as part of his atlas \u201c<em>Theatrum Orbis Terrarum<\/em>\u201d [Theatre of the World]. With original hand colouring. Verso: Italian text. Size: 40 x 48,6 cm.<\/p>\n<p>The cartouche mentions that this is a \u201cgeographical description of Gaul, newly revised in many places, and with distinct boundaries of the limits of the regions. Made by the authority of Petrus Plancius [who drew the map in 1592].<\/p>\n<p>This land is bordered by the Rhine, the Alps, the Mediterranean Sea, the Pyrenees Mountains, the British and Germanic <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Aquitani\">Aquitanian<\/a> Ocean; the Romans commonly called it Gaul; within its limits are confined today: the most powerful <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Francia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Kingdom of the Franks<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Savoy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Savoy<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Burgundy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Counties of Burgundy<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Old_Swiss_Confederacy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Helvetia<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Alsace\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Alsace<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Duchy_of_Lorraine\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Lorraine<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Low_Countries\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Low Countries<\/a>, and certain other regions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The map was map in the time of the French Wars of Religion, a period of civil war between French Catholics and <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Huguenots\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Huguenots<\/a>. Estimates suggest between two to four million people died from violence, famine or disease directly arising from the conflict.<\/p>\n<p>Abraham Ortelius (1527 &#8211; 1598) was an Antwerp cartographer, geographer, and cosmographer. His <em>Theatrum Orbis Terrarum<\/em> is considered to be the world\u2019s first modern atlas.
