Coloured by a later hand. Size: 50,8 x 50,5 cm.<\/p>\n<p>Depicted is a battle from the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Nine_Years%27_War\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Nine Years&#8217; War<\/a> (1688-1697) (often called the War of the Grand Alliance).<\/p>\n<p>To counter the expansionist drive of king <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Louis_XIV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Louis XIV of France<\/a>, the <a title=\"States General of the Netherlands\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/States_General_of_the_Netherlands\">States General of the Netherlands<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/William_III_of_England\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">William of Orange<\/a> brought the Dutch and English into the conflict against France and were soon joined by other states, meaning the French king faced a powerful coalition aimed at curtailing his ambitions.<\/p>\n<p>In 1692 Louis intended to land in <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Kingdom_of_England\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">England<\/a> with a Franco-Irish fleet of 44 <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ship_of_the_line\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ships of the line<\/a> (the Anglo-Dutch had 82). However, during the <a href=\"https:\/\/inter-antiquariaat.nl\/en\/antiques\/miscellaneous\/maritime-prints-drawings\/17th-century-naval-battle\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">naval battles at Barfleur and La Hougue<\/a> off the Normandy peninsula of Cotentin, the French lost 15 ships. The French war fleet now was no longer the largest in the world (England took over that position and would remain the state with the largest fleet until the 20th century).<\/p>\n<p>Whether the Dutch and French flagships, both with three gun decks, actually battled each other as seen in this engraving, is uncertain. But for sure, the victory had to be recorded and shown to a wide audience. (In the event of a defeat, the Dutch -of course- would have never made a print.)<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Peace_of_Ryswick\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Peace of Rijswijk<\/a> puts an end to the Nine Years&#8217; War. The Dutch Republic then focused on its land army and had high war debts. It was unable to build many warships and weakened as a maritime power.<\/p>\n<p>Later (in the 18th century), this engraving was added by publisher Gerard Van Keulen to his sea atlas.
