Size (view): 27 x 30 cm.<\/p>\n<p>From 1635, High German (<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ashkenazi_Jews\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ashkenazi<\/a>) Jews held house gatherings in the old Jewish quarter of <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Vlooienburg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Vlooienburg<\/a>, now Waterlooplein. However, due to the massive influx of Ashkenazi Jews fleeing wars and pogroms in Eastern Europe, the community grew rapidly. In 1670, a plot of land was purchased to build their own synagogue on Deventer Houtmarkt, now known as Jonas Dani\u00ebl Meijerplein.<\/p>\n<p>The synagogue was built by <a href=\"https:\/\/nl.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Elias_Bouman\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Elias Bouman<\/a>, who later also constructed the <a href=\"https:\/\/inter-antiquariaat.nl\/en\/antiques\/city-views\/amsterdam-city-views\/portuguese-synagoge-amsterdam-bernard-picard-1723-1727\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Portuguese Synagogue<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Huis_de_Pinto\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">House of De Pinto<\/a>. Its architectural style was influenced by the work of Amsterdam&#8217;s city architect, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Dani%C3%ABl_Stalpaert\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Dani\u00ebl Stalpaert<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The building cost 33,000 guilders, partially funded by a 16,000-guilder loan from the city of Amsterdam to the Ashkenazi community, and partially by selling seating rights. These seating rights were transferable and inheritable. The synagogue was inaugurated on March 25, 1671, the first day of Passover (Pesach).<\/p>\n<p>The fact that such a prominent synagogue could be built openly along a public road was rare in 17th-century Europe and is often seen as a testament to Dutch tolerance.<\/p>\n<p>This High German Synagogue quickly became too small for the growing community. As a result, three additional synagogues were built nearby: the <a href=\"https:\/\/nl.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Obbene_Sjoel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Second Synagogue<\/a> (1685), Dritt Shul (1700), and Nieuwe Synagoge (1752). In 1776-1777, the house on the corner was expanded.<\/p>\n<p>Today, the building is part of the <a href=\"https:\/\/jck.nl\/en\/location\/jewish-museum\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Jewish
