Afm. 28 x 44 cm.<\/p>\n<p>The 18th century was a period of rapid growth for London, reflecting an increasing national population, the early stirrings of the <a title=\"Industrial Revolution\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Industrial_Revolution\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Industrial Revolution<\/a>, and London&#8217;s role at the centre of the evolving British Empire.<\/p>\n<p>In 1707, an <a title=\"Acts of Union 1707\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Acts_of_Union_1707\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Act of Union<\/a> was passed merging the Scottish and the English Parliaments, thus establishing the Kingdom of Great Britain. A year later in 1708 , <a title=\"St Paul's Cathedral\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/St_Paul%27s_Cathedral\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">St Paul&#8217;s Cathedral<\/a> was completed.<\/p>\n<p>Many tradesmen from different countries came to London to trade goods and merchandise. Also, more immigrants moved to London making the population greater. More people also moved to London for work and for business making London an altogether bigger and busier city. <a title=\"Great Britain in the Seven Years' War\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Great_Britain_in_the_Seven_Years%27_War\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Britain&#8217;s victory in the Seven Years&#8217; War<\/a> increased the country&#8217;s international standing and opened large new markets to British trade, further boosting London&#8217;s prosperity.<\/p>\n<p>During the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Georgian_era\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Georgian period<\/a> London spread beyond its traditional limits at an accelerating pace. New districts such as <a title=\"Mayfair\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mayfair\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Mayfair<\/a> were built for the rich in the West End.Up until 1750, <a title=\"London Bridge\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/London_Bridge\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">London Bridge<\/a> was the only crossing over the Thames, but in that year <a title=\"Westminster Bridge\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Westminster_Bridge\">Westminster Bridge<\/a> was opened and encouraged an acceleration of development in <a title=\"South London\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/South_London\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">South London<\/a> and in the East End, the <a title=\"Port of London\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Port_of_London#Pool_of_London\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Port of London<\/a> expanded downstream from the City.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"English coffeehouses in the 17th and 18th centuries\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/English_coffeehouses_in_the_17th_and_18th_centuries\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">A phenomenon of the era was the coffeehouse<\/a>, which became a popular place to debate ideas. Growing literacy and the development of the printing press meant that news became widely available. <a title=\"Fleet Street\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Fleet_Street\">Fleet Street<\/a> became the centre of the embryonic national press during the century.<\/p>\n<p>18th-century London was dogged by crime. The <a title=\"Bow Street Runners\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bow_Street_Runners\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Bow Street Runners<\/a> were established in 1750 as a professional police force. Penalties for crime were harsh, with the death penalty being applied for fairly minor crimes.
