Kopergravure uitgegeven door <strong>John Thomson<\/strong>, te Edinburgh <strong>1816<\/strong>. Afkomstig uit \u201c<em>A New General Atlas of the World 1814-1828. Consisting of a Series of Geographical Designs on Various Projections.<\/em>\u201d Later met de hand gekleurd. Afm. ca 25 x 30 cm.<\/p>\n<p>Niet altijd bloeiden de Cura\u00e7aose handel en scheepvaart. In een tijd waarin Europese landen hun oorlogen tot in het Caribisch gebied uitstrekten, leed de Cura\u00e7aose handel grote schade doordat de strijdende partijen ook Hollandse en Cura\u00e7aose schepen op zee aanhielden en de koopwaar buitmaakten. Dat was niet onbegrijpelijk want in oorlogen waaraan de <a href=\"https:\/\/nl.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Republiek_der_Zeven_Verenigde_Nederlanden\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Republiek<\/a> niet deelnam, probeerde de handel voordeel te behalen met leveranties aan de oorlogvoerende partijen. Zeker de <a href=\"https:\/\/nl.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Amerikaanse_Onafhankelijkheidsoorlog\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Amerikaanse Onafhankelijkheidsoorlog<\/a>, waarin de Amerikanen grote behoefte hadden aan wapens en andere producten die men traditioneel van de Engelsen kocht, bood de Cura\u00e7aose handel en scheepvaart de mogelijkheid winst te behalen. De reactie van de Engelsen kon niet uitblijven en eind 1780 verklaarde het de oorlog aan de Republiek.<\/p>\n<p>Na de Franse Revolutie veroverden de Fransen in 1795 de Republiek en in de volgende twintig jaar vonden er verschillende veranderingen in het regeringssysteem plaats. Ondertussen werd de <a href=\"https:\/\/nl.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/West-Indische_Compagnie\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">West-Indische Compagnie<\/a> (WIC) eind 1791 opgeheven en haar bezittingen overgedragen aan de Nederlandse staat.<\/p>\n<p>Deze verwikkelingen hadden ook op Cura\u00e7ao hun invloed. Ook hier ontstond partijstrijd die tot machtswisselingen leidde. De onrust leidde in 1795 tot de grootste slavenopstand uit de Cura\u00e7aose geschiedenis. Van 1800 tot 1802 en van 1807 tot 1816 was het eiland Engels bezit.<\/p>\n<p>Na de <a href=\"https:\/\/nl.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Napoleontische_tijd\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Napoleontisch tijd<\/a> gaf Engeland de Caribische eilanden terug aan de pas gestichte Koninkrijk der Nederlanden. Hier leefde men in de optimistische verwachting dat de oude handelsbloei van Cura\u00e7ao zich zou herstellen. Maar er bleek geef afzet mogelijkheid voor de Europese producten die op Cura\u00e7ao werden aangevoerd.
