In 1771, Delft, with a population of approximately 25,000, was one of the most prosperous cities in the Netherlands and played an important role in the country’s economy. Its pottery factories produced wares not only for the Dutch market, but also for export to other European countries and far beyond. The city was also an important centre for shipping and had an active trade in colonial goods.

The southern side of the city was particularly busy. Ships were constantly arriving and departing, to such an extent that regulations had been introduced to keep the traffic moving smoothly. Only vessels already prepared for departure were permitted to moor in the Kolk, allowing them to make way quickly for the next ships. On both the city side and the outer side, the gate was fitted with a clock and a bell, which were used to regulate the departure of vessels.

The Schiedam Gate stood immediately beside the Rotterdam Gate. Behind the city walls, the two defensive complexes were connected by the Kapelsbrug, which crossed the Oude Delft canal.

Both gates were demolished in 1834–1836. The municipal authorities planned to lay out broad avenues that would make the city more easily accessible.
