Fraai in de tijd met de hand gekleurd. Afm. 47 x 56,4 cm.<\/p>\n<p>Op de kaart staat het noordwesten boven. In het midden het <a href=\"https:\/\/nl.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Leidsemeer\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Leidse-<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/nl.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Haarlemmermeer\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Haarlemmer-<\/a> en <a href=\"https:\/\/nl.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Spieringmeer\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Spieringmeer<\/a>. Plannen om die droog te maken bestonden er al in de 17<sup>e<\/sup>-eeuw, maar er bestond sterke oppositie. Zo wilde Leiden zijn lucratieve visrechten niet kwijt en lag Haarlem dwars omdat het fors verdiende aan de scheepvaart door het drassige land. Daarnaast ontbraken de middelen en was er weinig vertrouwen in de technische haalbaarheid van een droogmakerij op deze schaal.<\/p>\n<p>Het water \u2018vrat\u2019 steeds meer land weg en nadat eind 1836 het water tot aan Amsterdam werd opgejaagd, besloot koning Willem I dat het meer moest worden drooggemalen. Dat gebeurde uiteindelijk met stoomkracht in 1848-1852.<\/p>\n<p>Op de titelcartouche staat een man die in de ene hand een bijna verticaal gehouden schaalstok vasthoudt in zijn andere hark. Naast hem een karnton om te laten zien dat het een gebied is waar veeteelt wordt bedreven.<\/p>\n<p>Deze kaart, met het noorden rechts boven, verscheen in het 4e en laatste deel van \u201c<em>The English Atlas<\/em>\u201d. Deze atlas was het ambitieuze project van de Engelsman Moses Pitt waar hij in 1670 aan begonnen was. Pitt die noch wetenschapper, noch cartograaf was, wilde een atlas publiceren in 12 delen, die mooier en groter zou worden dan de \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/nl.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Atlas_Maior_(Blaeu)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Atlas Maior<\/em><\/a>\u201d van Joan Blaeu. De kaarten werden gedrukt van de koperplaten die hij die hij verkregen had van Johannes Janssonius\u2019 erven, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dbnl.org\/tekst\/eegh004amst05_01\/eegh004amst05_01_0075.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Johan Janssonius van Waesberge<\/a> en Steven Swart.<\/p>\n<p>Hoewel een flink aantal mensen had ingetekend en het project onder auspici\u00ebn stond van de Royal Society, kon hij niet tippen aan de Amsterdamse uitgevers die de markt al decennia lang domineerden. Pitt had het project onderschat en het ontbrak hem uiteindelijk aan financi\u00eble middelen en voldoende kennis om het tot een succes te maken.<\/p>\n<p>Het project liep uit op een fiasco en slechts 4 delen van de atlas werden gepubliceerd. Van het 5e deel is enkel de tekst verschenen.
